i have a reef tank lots of Coral and 9 fish and invertebrates it's a 55gal with 2 canister filters

i have the chance to get a eshopps psk 300 with sump at a great price

is that way to big? or will it be OK?

Don't worry about stripping the good stuff. You want to get the bad stuff out!

You have water changes to replace the good stuff and if you skim dry you will lose very little water

I would not worry about stripping the good stuff. A oversized skimmer just can't keep a stable head and will run worse than a properly sized skimmer

I want an RK2 for my 90.

I've told the wife if I get one, I wouldn't ever look at the tank again, I'd just stare in awe at the skimmer, and set an alarm so I don't miss when it washes itself.

My LFS has 2. I kinda hope they go out of business and sell me one cheap just so I can set it up on the porch.

Get it. The sump well be tons better than the canisters. And if by chance the skimmer is too big to keep a good head with your bioload, get more fish!

The best most consistent performing skimmers I have had are ones that have been rated at or just slightly larger than my tank size. The worst performers have been the ones grossly oversized. Not sure if it is all being oversized, or if it was combo of that and the actual skimmers just sucking. If it is a steal, go for it. If you are unhappy with the performance you could always sell and put that towards a smaller rated one.

its a Eshopps psk 300 rated for 200 to 300 gallons and a clear Eshopps Wd-125cs wet dry filter rated for 100 to 125 gallons. both new for $150. i have a 55 gallon tank

get em,
rip out the bioballs,
put in a filter sock,
sell the skimmer for $200,
buy an SRO or SWC or BM skimmer appropriate for your tank
???????

PROFIT!

Mek - The performance of the skimmer on your tank more than anything else, will depend on the diameter of the neck. If it is too big, it simply wont skim.

Assuming that the air draw, bubble size, and skimmer body are a good design, you could have a skimmer rated for 1,000xtank size, and with the appropriate diameter neck and transition it will skim well.

I tried to find spec's for the skimmer neck on the 300, but couldn't. Generally, I would stay away from anything with a neck larger than 3.5" or 4" for your size tank.

If you do buy and use, post some pics, spec's, and feedback for others to reference. Good luck!

Very good point Nate, have to concentrate the skimmed proteins in order to build a head. I just did a thorough search and can't find the neck diameter either.

I'm new when you say neck size you mean the area between the body of the skimmer and the collection cup? i would post a photo but I'm posting from my phone.

Eshopps are good skimmers to oversize(necks are smaller than most other skimmer mfg with like sized air draw/pumps)... the PSK300 has a small enough neck that it will work good(7" body and the neck is like 3 1/2" I.D. I believe)...also air draw is around 600lph for that model so it should be OK...the 200 model would be better though... you should go without filter socks to keep up skimmate production better...and no carbon/purigen either. A secondary key to over sized skimmers is running the system berlin style...let the skimmer do the work and forget about DOC adsorbtion media and macro algae.

The neck size is the measurement in width of the neck (tube running up from the skimmer body into the collection cup).

thanks swcc i will look up that Berlin style when i get home. at that price for both i could not pass it up. and i can use it when i upgrade my tank next year.

The ETSS 600 had been specifically underrated for this system to allow for better sponge growth in the cryptic zone tank. Now that the sponge growth is progressing well and that i'm now culturing 3 species of Phytoplankton, i decided to upgrade to the ETSS 1500 XR which handles 410 gals net water volume very nicely.
