I was there as well, unfortunately I walked out empty handed. Not much left after a few major stores went through the place.Very nice guys though. I would have liked to seen the place in its prime. Wish they would have stayed open.

I got to see the store once while it was open a little over a year ago....It was very nice...but as for service, when my friend asked how much a black tang was, they responded "very expensive" and walked away! Needless to say, we walked out and he went to Big als and bought a goldflake angel! I lived and worked in Boca for 3 years and I dont think Ive ever been treated so rude!

lol, going there was kind of like that episode of sienfeld with the soup stand... but dammit he had the best stuff, and was actually really cool if you talked to him for a while.

Wow. I can't imagine why he would be going out of business...

Yeah, Scott is a bit on the testy side, to say the least! There's no middle ground...he either likes you or he doesn't, and he makes it very clear which list you're on. But he's always been wonderful to me (maybe the cleavage helps?) and has given me great deals on some amazing livestock. I'm heartbroken that he's not going to be around anymore.

He's the "Fish Nazi," I guess!

From what I understand, he never really needed the money. The only reason he's closing down is because he's tired of the obnoxious people that would come in and hassle him about silly things...it has nothing to do with money. That's also why he was rude to people that he decided he didn't like, for whatever reason. He was completely and totally in it for the love of the hobby, not for money.

I guess it's easy for me to say this, since he was always very cool to me, but I always admired him for his commitment to the hobby. He would flat out refuse to sell any of his livestock to someone who didn't have the appropriate tank for them (You want to talk about the tang police? He's the sheriff!) Considering how beautiful his livestock was, I'd be pretty picky about the homes they were going to as well if I were in his shoes!

Judging from what I've seen, the best deals will probably be on dry goods, and there is plenty of high-end stock. There is crazy nice live rock as well, and some fish. There are some corals, but they've been picked over, and I'm not sure what is for sale and what isn't.

It's definitely worth a look, though.

That's the dark side of gender discrimination... :p

Women still make 74 cents to a man's dollar for doing the same job and having the same credentials...we've got to make up for that somehow!

Well, not too much cleavage here, but he told me a year and a half ago that the store was for sale and he wanted to get out of the public eye. He did have the most amazing stuff in those tanks along the wall....he was allright once you got talking to him for a while.

well I'd imagine after being in the biz for as long as him and watching gorgeous fish and corals killed regularly by people that had no clue how to take care of them woudl eventually sour you to the whole biz.

Think about it, how many of you guys that are very experienced wince everytime you see some guy regularly kill the stuff he buys and then run out and restock his tank so he could slowly kill them too over and over. If you truly cared about the animals you were selling you'd have a hard time not hating being in the business.. and forget about the places that ship stuff in and sell it off before it can even acclimate from the shipping, which is really the only way to truly make money here. I know I could never do it.

I couldn't disagree more, Being in the business long, seeing fish & corals being killed, dealing with inexperience hobbyist and so on gives you choices, you either become a dedicated store owner that takes the time to ensure that people understand what you've learn through experience and share your knowledge with the customer every time you can.

This choice requires a lot of patience and customer service skills, it is a very hard thing to do but truly in the best interest of the livestock. You don't really think that if you don't sell something to somebody he is not going to turn around and go buy it somewhere else.

Scott chose to let his feelings and personality ruled the way he conducted business, this was the problem not the ignorant people, also, there is nothing wrong with being like Scott, a true animal lover just not made for this kind of work period.

I really learned a lot from Scott and learned to keep away from his boundaries while I was at his territory but it took a lot of patience in my part to understand him, I enjoyed visiting his store and purchasing from him, however, I am actually very happy for him, I am sure he will be happy and relief once all this is over, I am sad that all his knowledge cannot be share anymore.

I do encourage anyone to try to go to his store and help buying something, but don't go with the idea that you are going to get a killer deal because you are not, but what you are going to get is top notch quality equipment that has been well care for at a decent price.

top quality merchandise can be bought at many places, and if the guy is as unpleasant to deal w/ as it sounds than i'd rather go elsewhere.

yes I agree and disagree with your post.

The problem that I see with new hobbyist and even experienced ones is the tendency to go out and buy all the wrong equipment, get the cheapest crap they can to do a setup, and then save the bulk of their cash to buy expensive demanding animals that the equipment and setups just can't support even though they were told from Day one to not buy that stuff and were given a roadmap to create a proper setup with the proper equipment. So after getting the advice on how to build a good tank they goto someone else's store or hop on the internet buy everything they were told not to, then they come back to the store to buy the corals, ***** about stuff being too expensive, and then complain a few months later all their corals are dying.

I've seen over and over people who cut every corner when it comes to buying their skimmers, lighting, and don't care that their tank turnover is half of where it should be, spend $100 on a crappy RO system that barely works or even worse get RO from a store and not bother to make sure the RO water is actually any good cause little do they know the store is using a 2 stage filter that hasn't had a filter changed on it in 2 years of heavy use. Worse yet is how people buy seawater from guys that deliver, and when you ask the guys that sell the seawater their criteria from pulling water from the inlet is "If it looks cloudy I won't pull it".. and then with a few months or a year the tank is so overrun with hair algae and other pests they simply throw everything out and start over.

I don't get in these people's faces and wave my finger at em, but I don't run a store, if i did, it would definately **** me off... I do realize that newbies will ALL make the same mistakes and kill stuff over and over until they either quit the hobby or figure out they need a good setup and good paramaters before chucking everything they can buy up into their tank. I made similar mistakes, and luckily I only killed a few softies like shrooms and leathers in my beginner days, and after buying the same setup 3x over I finally learned not to cut corners cause it just ends up costing more in the end anyways.

Scott is my friend, and yes, his customer service sucks, all I am saying is I can understand it. That being said, he ran the biz as a hobbyist first and opening to the public was an afterthought for him. If you did get past the initial bad customer service and talked to him you would have been all the better for it as a person and a hobbyist.
