Can anyone help with sump build?

I have a 75g tank and want to make a sump. I am going to use a 20g tank to make it and due to the construction of the stand I am unable to put the sump in the stand. It will be going beside it. I am very inexperienced when it comes to anything DIY and am not sure on baffle height or rates of flow. I have done some reading on understanding sumps but havent came across the information to figure out baffle height.

Thanks in advance

i am going to be be building a new sump in the next few months. from what i read baffle heights seem to be a matter of preference since i haven't been able to find some sort of formula to go by. your best bet would be to come up with a drawing. i would just do a 2d one in paint and then post it on here or just look at designs that are in the lighting and filtration or DIY forums

I guess I will just have to make my overflow so that it doesnt empty too much water into the tank. I will just have to simulate a powerfailure and see how much water i get as a result and then add the rest from there. Thanks for your response. I will try the drawing.

Depending on whether the height of the tank is a 20 long, 20 high, or regular tank, you'll want to vary your baffle heights. In general, I wouldn't make them higher than 2/3 of the tank under any circumstance, and personally, I may not even go that high. As stated, a lot will depend on a power failure level. You definitely want some room to allow for evaporation so you aren't adding water twice a day to keep it running because you built it with very little allowance for anything. I'd be more than happy to help you with building it since all you're really doing is putting the baffles into the glass tank, and could help with design too, but I'll at least need to know the dimensions of your tank.

Try this site;

Look under "Sump\Refugiums & Acrylic Work"

I've found allot of good tips and tricks there.

Marc has allot of designs he has made for other people and himself.

I used 1/2" thick black plastic on 2 baffles to block light from entering the pump and skimmer areas.

I have a little left if you choose, I could get it to you some how.

or cut the size you need if there's enough.

I don't have weld on but I have GE polymershapes acrylic cement. I can give you some. You need an aplicator to apply it though. Sorry, but you can't have mine. I would let you use it though. I live in new ken.

:lol: Yea I know but the applicator was kinda hard to find. Ended up having to order it and wait 4 days for it. I don't want to lose it again. The cement comes in quart cans, and a little goes a long way. You'd only need a small amount to build a sump.

GE polymershapes in Crabberry. They bought out the old company I used to use, I think they were called Caddilac plasiics in Monroeville. I don't know if they're in the book. I got the phone number from the company that was next door to caddilac a few years back. I've had the same can for a few years. Still over half full.

I got Weldon-on 4 (they carry all sizes) and applicators there. They can't carry Weld-on 16 I think it is due to hazardous material regulations guidelines, rules crap thingy...
:D

They're the ones I got my applicator from. They had to ship it from Florida. I do buy sheet and rods from them also.
