I hope someone can. I have a tiny bit of it sprouting on the bottom of a frag plug. It's actually really cool. I've been wondering what it is. Mine gets tiny bright red specks on it that glow under actinic light.
In my head, I call it "red bubble algae." But it's clearly not as undesirable as actual bubble algae. Grows slowly, doesn't seem to spread at a disastrous rate, and it looks interesting.
Mine's got maybe 4 "bubbles" and has grown all of quarter of an inch in two months. They don't look the same shape as the red valonia images I can find but it does sound like the text descriptions given in the link above. Either it's super lazy and misshapen or it's something else. I will keep an eye on it, but unless it shows signs of taking off, I do actually like looking at it.
I've got it in my fuge and it certainly is a slow grower. I've had it on two small rocks for several months and can't say it's grown much in that time. The bladders are certainly larger than the maximum described in the provided link. Some of them more than an inch long. I think it actually looks like Botryocladia pseudodichotoma (Sea Grapes).
After a 4 year losing battle with Halmeda, I don't want ANYTHING in my new tank that has potential for a hostile take over. It may be innocuous, but I'm too chicken**** to risk it. Just keep a close eye on it IMO. Any suspect behavior and......evict it.
