does anyone know what this is. I found it in my aquapod that has been setup for well over a year. it just started growing last week.

They could also be tunicates. In either case the animals filter feed by sucking in water which is good for your tank.
 
I have one of those things. It is pretty large now, I believe they are a sponge, but haven't been able to get a positive ID.
 
It's a Syconoid Sponge. A sign of a very healthy tank but can get out of control with heavy nutrients. I have a few myself and they're under control.

Go to www.wetwebmedia.com and do a search on Syconoid Sponges and you'll get a wealth of info!
 
Yeah, in the display they can start popping up on your glass and get annoying, but not at a fast rate or anything. And they're harmless. Mine are all in my sump, I like the little guys. I wish they came in more colors besides white though.
