I've never been snorkeling or diving and the wife and kids are planning a cruise this fall to the caribbean. Wondering if someone can recommend a good cruise line that has good snorkeling excursions as part of the trip.

Yes I have been on many cruise ships and I would not go on another one even if for free unless it was the Windstar. Unfortunately, there are no kids allowed so that is out for you.
Sorry I can't think of another one that has snorkling included, they all take you to places that are mobbed, way over crowded.
But you can get off the ship almost anywhere in the Caribbean and snorkel.
I would not do any of the snorkling trips included in the package for the above reason but find a hotel and ask them in the lobby where they recommend thats not too crazy and crowded.
I usually find a local to take us but with the kids you want at least some people around, just not 500 people

I stick with Royal Caribbean and have been on a 15 cruises with them. They offer many snorkeling/scuba options and have a dive shop onboard to rent out equipment, at least the Freedom Class does. The Oasis is the new hotness if you have money.

Also they have Discover Dives that you can do if your not scuba certified.

Belize and Cozumel are really good for diving and snorkeling.

Royal Caribbean is where you want to go. Carnival is like a knock off. I went on a snorkeling/scuba with carnival and it was pretty disappointing. Aside from the free beer at the end they kind of took us in circles. I saw the same lobster, crabs, sponges, & fish like 5 times. I spoiled myself in going on the Royal first. I know for a fact that I won't be going on Carnival ever again. The Royal is a lot bigger, cleaner, and a bit more classy. I plan on trying out the other cruise lines this summer. But Royal is definitely my favorite so far

I went on the Carnival Glory to the Eastern Caribbean and the first stop we went snorkeling by ourselves, after hearing just such comments as those above. It was okay but nothing spectacular.
Later in the trip, at the U.S. Virgin Islands, we went snorkeling and there were about 15 in the large inflatable boat, none (except my wife and I)of whom had snorkeled before. The boat masters were very friendly and helpful to the beginners. We anchored in a small, shallow bay with a mini-coral reef and seagrass and it was quite nice. Lasted a couple of hours and then we left. Got some good pictures and enjoyed ourselves.
Now before you accuse me of being a Carnival rep, it was our first cruise, and I am going again this year on a rival line that doesn't allow kids (we don't have any and Carnival is very oriented toward them) Different experiences for different folks.
While it wasn't a pristine reef, I wouldn't have wanted it to be, given what volumes of tourists with no experience snorkeling went through there.
Oh, and here's some pics to show how it was

This is the Windstar in Bora Bora, the only ship I will go on. The back opens up and becomes a dock for the dive and snorkel boats to come out on.
There are only about 200 guests aboard, but sorry, no kids.

We went on a Carnival Cruise and it was a lot of fun, great for kids, lots to do and pretty good food. One thing I learned was to get a cabin that is midship (both deck height and from front to back) to lessen the movement you will feel. I second the Cayman and Cozumel choices for good snorkeling.
Check out CruiseCritic.com for more info on cruise choices. Have fun.

Between my fiancee and I we have crusied on Big Red Boat, Carnival, Royal Carribean, and Norwegian. I have liked norwegian the best for snorkeling as they took us to a reef where there was no one else around. They keeop the groups to around 20 people. We arrived there via a catamaran sailboat with all the rum punch we could drink on the way back. Was pretty sweet, loved it so much we are going on another Norwegian crusie for our honeymoom in July... only this time I am armed with a 1080P underwater camcorder!

Check out Disney Cruise Lines, they have plenty of snorkle/dive trips on there bahamas trips.Top notch service and the kids love it,plus there island at Castaway Cay is great also. Were going next year on the new ship the Dream, will be our 4th time.eric
