just wondering how pieces like this come to exist, is it a natural reaction to its environment or dye?

IMO it is probably post picture processing to make the colors pop..photoshop can be a wonderful thing..lol..would love to see it with not all actinic lighting too..

Ya photoshoping pics can really make a coral look awesome but it sucks that dealers do it and i think it would be hard to dye a chalice. The chalice that is posted has multipule colors i would figure it would be impossible to do that with dye because if that chalice was dyed then the colors would most likley mix under the tissue. Also i think a dyed chalice wouldnt have such solid colors they would be more bland or transparent looking.

It exists I have a piece of it. The colors are insane! The only color that I see a little bit faded on my piece is the color blue compaired to that picture.

what do they want 500 an eye

Wouldn't be surprised. Someone has some chalice's listed in the for sale section for 750$. lol. I have an awesome item to sell. Beats them all. It is a little capsule pill that, when its in water, it will grow dinosaurs , fish, even people if you want. Then when you take it out of the water, it shrinks. $750

depends on who you ask. the muslims will say allah, christians, Jesus and the atheist, BAM! from an unexplainable explosion.
I read some corals and animals are brightly colored because it signals to other predators that it's poisonous so a natural reaction to its environment sounds more plausible. I have a similar chalice and i can tell you its not dye. when i first got it the blue was really nice but the other colors were sorta pale but the blue has faded to a purple and now a purple/grey color. all other colors turned brighter though. has something to do with my tank params.

i'll feed my chalice and let you know if the blue comes back. i can tell my nutrient levels have been decreasing a lot lately

Lots of rainbow chalices around lately. Yes, they are that brightly colored.

Lighting plays a role, of course...

Corals also morph in hobbyists tanks. In one tank it could look one way, then in another tank with different lighting/filtration, it could look completely different. I've heard of green chalices turning red for no apparent reason. Also, sometimes some corals (i.e. acans) can switch zooxanthella with each other, causing color changes in one or both pieces. Basically, if you're going to get a coral online, make sure you KNOW it will look at least something like that in your tank. Some websites photoshop their actinic shots to make them look unreal, and most of the time, it is.

To the local guys..is the person you are talking about local also? Probably out of my price range though anyways..

No he is not local. His name is Rich Negret. He lives in Florida. He is a great guy to deal with. You can find a piece of the Rainbow Crush chalice on a certain online auction web-site occasionally. It is very expensive.
