Can chalice survive with no mouth in frag?

I feel they can live without a mouth long enough to form one. Just as acans dont need fed. However, both would do better if they had a way to get food.

I dont think they need mouths, But i would never ship a piece that small without one. JMO
I have had frags of chalices without mouths and have them now at 4-7 inches.

as long as they have zoozanthallae i don't see why the mouth would be important.
I was thinking the same thing... I have had small frags with no visible mouth grow them.

Stacie...WAS awesome. The poor thing got torched by an acan echinata and I lost 2/3 of the mother colonym :(. I recently fragged the 1/3 of the coral that was left as I was noticing die off on part of it. One of the frags is looking great, the other (with the die off) is still losing some flesh here and there but will probably make it in the end. It is kind of like starting over as the good frag is only marginally bigger than the original frag when I first got it. What a bummer. The acan torched another of my chalices a few months before getting the Golden eye and that one recovered really quickly and is doing great. I think the Golden Eye got nailed for a much longer period before I found it :(.

Alicia...

My frag of Hugos Watermelon started as less than a pea in size...almost a BB LOL it is now 6mo later about a 1/4" and still has no mouth but looks very healthy

Doc, excellent news and more corroboration that this little guy can survive...that seems to be the story with the vast majority of receivers of the watermelon chalice, tiny, tiny, tiny with no mouth. I guess I was lucky, the person I got it from believes that getting a mouth is important and so my little watermelon frag started out with two mouths :D. Heck my red watermelon from Tyree had three mouths :D :D.

Well, everyone has certainly given me hope on this guy. It still looks about the same as the day I got it. I think it may have even colored up just a tad. I can't really discern any new growth on the edges even with the mesoscope but there is definately no tissue loss over this last 6 days. That has to be encouraging. I am hoping this little guy pulls through and grows and grows :D.

I still think it is good practice to include a mouth on frags of chalices even though it seems they are able to thrive in good tank conditions without one. I am going to take a picture of this little guy this weekend as he seems pretty settled in and I am not so worried about stressing him for a macro shot in my photo cup out of the tank. I have to admit he is not much to look at and for the price I am still in a bit of shock as to what I got, but the potential is huge. Cross your fingers for me, heck cross all of your extremities for me on this one. I want it to live.

The pic will be embarassing to say the least :(....not much to it but I'll post it here this weekend.

On a positive note, doc your chalice freebie that came in with no water is looking great. The pink mouth is emerging and the body is slowly coloring up for me, very nice :).

As promised, the frag in question. Sorry for the graniness of the shot, I still have a long way to go with my camera.

The frag is in the middle of the pic and has some light blue marbling showing. As you can see the skeleton portions are all colonized with algae, sort of camo green, no fresh white skeleton showing except a little spot off to the left where I cut old skeleton away and got into a bit of flesh. The mother colony is quite stunning and I expected a lot different looking frag...Oh well, like I said major potential if it lives:D. For size reference the flesh area is barely 1/4" by 1/2".

WOW :( who sent you that? Hope it was a freebie ... Did it arrive like that?

eh nevermind ... Those frags always look soooo stressed out for the first few months, especially when they are that small cuz you cant make out the colors and structures yet... Do you have a pic of how its supposed to look? It'll prolly turn out fine and knock our socks off when it heals up.

doc, That was most definately not a freebie and it was not cheap, not even a little. It is a bit sickening to me :(...but I am still going with the potential. I do have a picture of the mother colony but that would reveal the seller publicly and I don't want to do that. I'm just not that way. I'm feeling pretty good about its prospects after this thread and the fact that it is looking fairly good after a week in my tank.

Alicia, I hope you post feedback in the feedback forum. I would hate to see others have the same thing happen - or perhaps you and the seller can work it out?

Sorry for the bad experience!

Melissa

David, I PM'd you about this a week or so ago and in that PM talked about the source. I am not into public disclosure on this one. The seller has said he will make good on this if I do in fact loose the frag so that is good enough for me. I am keeping him posted on its status.

Thanks Melissa...it looks like the seller will definately work on this with me and that in the end is all anyone can ask for when things go wrong. If it had been a better frag to begin with this would be a non issue for me. I am aware that losses happen and always take responsibility when things go wrong in my tank. This was a goner from the beginning...but it is still hanging on, barely.

Ah, just checked my PM's - I remember now. Hopefully it comes thru, I'm sure that guy will makegood - I actually have an order in. From all I've heard thats a good vendor. Good luck, keep us posted. That is one stunning mother colony!
