Can clams be stung?

I lost a squamosa the other day, first clam loss ever (sucks)

It was doing fine, been in the tank for 6 months (established tank) and the morning I go to see it and the open brain that is near (but not touching) is *HUGE* and the clam is nearly gone.

Is it possible for the clam to be stung? There have been no new additions to the tank since the clam, but I have never seen the a brain so big. It was honestly the size of a softball (the base of the brain is perhaps 1/2" in diameter)

Clams are unaffected by the sting of other corals.

What type of lighting did you have it in?? How long have you had it?? Did you feed the clam?? How big was the clam??

110 watts of PC lighting over the 5 gallon nano. Had it 6 months, not fed directly, but with the general feeding of the other corals. It was about 2" in length.

I've had squamosas under PC lights before successfully, FWIW

Well.. any clam less that 3" in size should be feed with phytoplankton on a regular basis. A 2" clam's mantle is unable to absorb enough light to produce enough food thru photosynthesis alone.

Also how stable is the system fluctuations in a 5g nano can be swift and severe and clams are very sensitive to changes in grav and ph also at that size they should be fed phyto 2-3 times a day which may not be feasible for a tank of that size due to the incresed nutrient levels...pyrrhus
