Can corals be dipped in Fresh water?

Was thinking where to post this question and did not find the proper place. Please move if required.

All corals which are going to tank are dipped in RX coral, but does it kill Velvet or Ich?

Let's assume LFS has these diseases in store tanks (water circulates among all tanks wish fishes and corals).

I bring coral home and after RX dip, it will go in the tank.

Can I use Fresh water to reduce possibility of Velvet introduction?
thanks

No, dipping coral in fresh water is very stressful to most of them. It has been my experience that sps exposed to fresh water has bleached and died.

I do short fresh water dips on new or transferred zoas... Never had any problem... Usually a 30 second dip... Not saying anyone else should try it, but it seems fine to me...

Will an FWD even reliably kill encysted ich or velvet? My impression was that when encysted, they are very reistant to almost anything other than temperature extremes, oxidation, and drying. Thats why I always use bleach to sterilize during TTM QT.

I don't think you have to worry about coral introducing ich and velvet. I would just dip them in Coral RX and check for any coral pests. You should be fine.

Coral can bring in ich if the tomonts decide to lay on a rock attached to a coral or the coral itself. There is always that possibility. Chances of it happening?

As for freshwater dips, i was able to place weslos and zoas without issues. Some went as long as 20 minutes, anything more and I began noticing the zoas detach from the rock and now you have 50 polyps sitting in the bottom of your bucket

Zoos and LPS handle FW dips quite well, not so much for SPS as Jim mentions. With CoralRX being iodine based, it's probably just as effective as a FW dip would be. Not a 100%, but better than nothing.

Softies and LPS yes, not on SPS. I have done 1 minute FW dips on mushrooms and leathers before. Helps kill flatworms.

Hmm, I thought at low tide sps can be exposed for the better part of an hour. Guess it never rains at that time.

I dip all of my corals in revive, and float a bag of rodi water in my tank to match temps. After the corals are dipped, I briefly dip in the rodi water from the bag(poured into container) for less than 20 seconds and usually shake the coral gently from side to side, then it goes in my tank.
This advice is based on lps and softies only.
Sps I'd be more careful with

There are no exact rules when dealing with coral FY dips will be fine for some lethal for others. Most SPS are never exposed to air as they are deeper. Some are exposed reguarly, and will do fine. So as a general rule don't dip SPS or take them out of the water when avoidable.
