Can Dosing Iodine cause Algae?

Can dosing small amounts of Lugols cause algae to grow? I know macro algae use it and wanted to know if it can fuel other types of algae as well, especially diatoms?

Yes it can. It may have more to due with the antibacterial properties of the iodine reducing competition for the algae, than its ability to nourishing the algae itself.

IME, iodine dosing can cause rapid growth of florescent green algae on the glass.
