Can GFO kill SPS?

I think alk burn and low nutrients go together. You can either lower your alk or youd be better off adding some trace elements. My preference is to carefully add a little iodine. Im pretty sure gfo strips out more than just phos.

I never new that GFO strips out iodine.
Thanks

I have never experienced tip burn like that and I have used GFO in all my systems. I've used more than I should at times, even on ULN tank with all pastel acros….. still no tip burn. IMO this has more to do with your pellets used in conjunction with gfo. Tip burn is common in tanks that overdose their carbon source. Maybe back off on the amount of pellets.

Not sure if GFO strips iodine. I suspect that it does as well as other trace elements as does carbon. I struggled with this issue for years with tip burn and low nutirents never thinking about trace elements. A while back I came across some discussions on low nutrient systems completely lacking iodine and that dosing a small amount actually had some positive results for some folks. So I tried and literally within 3 days I noticed my sps geting healthier. Now I have no problem keeping a healthy sps tank. I've continued to wonder if this was an issue that only affects a very small percentage of tanks or if there's something we aren't aware of for maintaining healthy tanks. I suspect that iodine plays a bigger role than we think. I no longer suffer burned tips due to alk or low nutrients and its a direct result of iodine addition.
Use extreme caution when adding iodine. Its very easy to overdose and test kits are not very accurate.
