Well, I added the first coral to my tank this morning. A sun coral colony about 3 inches in diameter. It has been in Megan's (my girlfriend) tank for about four months. It was doing very well for the first two or three months, but has since been on the decline. Well, we finally figured out why.

Her damned cleaner shrimp have found that it tastes "good". I watched them last night picking at the polyps.

This morning the coral is already opened and looking much happier, and it has only been in the tank for about 45 minutes.

So for the question................ any answers? Chicken? Steak?

I will use organic chicken with no hormones, the same for the steak.

The cleaner shrimp are probably actually stealing food from the sun polyp's mouths and not eating them. This is very typical. Whenever you feed the sun polyps, the shrimp will go over and dig inside their mouths to grab the food. For this reason, it is not good to keep the two together.

I don't know why you'd want to feed chicken or steak... I doubt that it has the appropriate nutrition. Stick with seafood like pieces of shrimp, mysid, cyclops, ect.

I have seen the shrimp stealing food from them. This attack was much different. The shrimp were actually tearing yellow tissue from the coral.

As for the Chicken/steak question............. totally joking, I only feed my sun coral New Zealand Lamb.

Yeah pump that sun coral full of hormone chicken and steak and maybe it will become the hulk or something and eat the shrimp, who knows?

Your sun coral will be a lot happier if you feed it cleaner shrimp :D and if you can find Kobe cleaner shrimp then it really will be happy!

I've had cleaners literally rip open polyps to eat the food out that the coral is digesting... I hate those suckers!

Put a pop bottle over the colony and then feed with mysis. These will prevent the shrimp from stealing your corals food and also prevent the food from going everywhere in your tank.

Sun corals tend to be a little picky. They are always sending their steak back unless its EXACTLY medium rare, and then they have the nerve to ask for A1 in a steakhouse...the nerve.

after you target feed just keep the cleaner shrimp away until the polyps are finished. I just squirt my cleaner with the baster and he runs for cover.
