I am considering buying a dwarf angel such as a flame or eibl's angel. Is it possible to house them together in a 40g tank or am I doomed to dead clams?
It is possible; some angles nip some don't. It all depends on the prsonality of the fish. Personlly I woudn't because clams are one of the most communly niped upon sessel inverts because of their fleshy mantel.

I have a flame in my 120 mixed reef and an Eibl in my 70 SPS. Neither bother my corals or clams, and I have 15 clams between the two tanks. I do see both occassionally picking copods or other small inverts off the corals and clams from time to time, and this does cause then to retract.
My 70 also has three (3) Atlantic pygmy angels with the Eibl.
I have a flame angel in my 72 with a Maxima and a Deresa. It's never even pecked at the clams. Once in a great while it will peck at a Digitata as it passes by, but that is about it.
All depends, do ya feel lucky! If so purchase one, but be prepaired to get it back out of tank if need be. Ill keep some large angels with my clams in the future, and if its a problem no big deal..ill catch them and put it in the FOWLR...not everyone has that option.
I have a dwarf with a crocea and a deresa with no problems so far. But he was a little Bas@#@# with my black perc until I got her (the black perc)a male.
