Can I turn off return pump and skimmer at night?

Hello Guys,

I have a tank setup in my bedroom and the noise that made from herbie over flow is noticeable during bed time. I am wondering if I can turn off return pump and skimmer at night with one heater and 2 wave maker circulating the tank during that time. Is that doable or have anyone done similar to that? I would like to hear some comments and advice please.

Thank you!

No. It would likely kill everything you have from lack of oxygen, plus elevation of nitrates.
SUggest you revise your overflow to a noiseless one.

If your heaters are in your sump that alone necessitates that you run the return pump 24/7. I would look into fine tuning your herbie overflow, it should be dead quiet and possibly getting a better return pump to quiet things down. Your skimmer will work better if you let it run 24/7.

There ARE silent overflows: for one thing, fix the intake so that it intakes lower than the water level in the sump.

I think, if your water is good, it will be fine.

I'm here in Vietnam. Sometimes, there is no power in few hours. But my fishes are fine :)

I had a bedroom tank where I used to do this. It was fine, but make sure you have a heater in your sump as well so that the temperature matches when you turn the pump back on. Eventually, I changed the system so that the return flow rate was very low (100 gph on a 40 gallon tank), and played with the valve on the drain so that the overflow is now silent.

A herbie overflow system should be dead silent if set-up and tuned properly (I know mine is) do some research on the Herbie system to make sure you have everything set-up correctly. One other problem could be too strong of a return pump causing quite a bit of racket just by the rushing of water through the overflow weir so that is another thing to look for.
As far as turning the skimmer off overnight I dont see that as a problem but I would advise against turning off the return pump.

I used to have a timer that turned of my return pump at night because it annoyed me. It was fine. There was enough oxygenation from other things. I agree, though, that your sump might be a problem so throw in a powerhead down there.

Thanks for tips and advice guys. I will play around with my over flow and return pump first. If I can't get it to work then, i will have to setup my sump with power head and schedule to run it at night. Thanks again!

Plus 1 on this. Tune that Herbie and make sure it is set up right.
