Can I use this heater?

I have a finnex 300w titanium heater+controller laying around. My system is probably somewhere around 30 gallons total, maybe even a little less. I wasn't sure if this would be too much or not?

I don't see why you can't use it especially since you have a controller. I would feel safer with a smaller heater but this should get you by.

it would be fine until it fails. IME, temp probes eventually go bad. when that happens, your tank could get very hot very quickly, possibly before you realize it. if the heater was a more normal size for your tank, the consequences of a failure are much less.

The heater box recommends 40-80g, I was thinking of maybe down the road adding a RDSB or just something to up the water volume.

Not quite, it's almost done I'm just waiting on a pump I ordered... I will definitely be posting pics and such though soon. The idea is to have my fuge/sump get pumped water up from the DT and then drain back into the DT. The funny thing is this was like the easiest way for me to do it, due to positioning and equipment I already had.

I would vote to get another heater more appropriately sized for your tank. This is an expensive hobby. I would not want to risk anything if I didn't have to
