Can ich exist on a fish without seeing it long term?

Would formalin be an option?

I actually talked to Karen about this. She said she does a light 1ml/1g formalin bath for 45 in between the tank transfers. She said this is what they do at the Waikiki aquarium too. She said it's worked really well for them and they've never experienced any adversed effects even with their breeding pairs either and they've gone on to spawn without any problems.

Yes, that study was done by Colorni and Burgess in the late '90s. They observed that a given strain of Cryptocaryon "burns out" after something like 10 generations or so. That was just one observation, and I wouldn't assume it's universally true.

100% correct, another study was conducted and they were able to keep ich alive for over 2 years.
