Agreed. If I remember my college physics correctly, waves move through a medium in a vertical column so the force of the wave is dependent on the mass of the water in the wave, water depth and speed of the wave. In a nutshell, there is a huge difference between a large sloshing wave and gentle lapping of waves.
Furthermore, as is the actual ocean, the ground, sides of the tank and actual rock provide considerable drag on the wave as it moves through the tank. So its unlikely that the sides are being buffeted by the full force of the wave to begin with.
