Don't know which species of oyster's form pearls, or if it is all. But I have a Blue Point oyster in my fuge that I got at the seafood counter of the grocery store. Its still happy 6 months or so later too.

Saltwater cultured pearls can never be mass-produced. Millions of oysters are nucleated every year, but only a small proportion live to produce fine-quality pearls. Many oysters don't survive nucleation, others are weak and fall prey to disease. ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Â The Hindu, S&T Desk
