Can phytoplankton be cultured with "24/7 lighting"?

Hiya

Does anyone here culture their phytoplankton with 24/7 non-stop lighting? I was wondering do they grow faster this way without backfiring. :bounce3: Many thanks in advance.

Hi....

My husband and I culture our own phyto (rotifers too) and we had changed our light cycle to 24/7 a few months back. We read in the Clownfishes book that you could culture it without shutting the lights down so we gave it a try. While we did notice a quicker growth rate we also seemed to have an issue with it crashing if we didn't re-culture after day 6 or 7. We just switched back slightly over 2 weeks ago to 16 hours of light and the last 2 cultures didn't crash so we're back to 8 hours of darkness.

Best wishes,

April

I've done both ways also and I agree. It does grow faster but you MUST split the culture regularly or it will crash.
