Can two 2 to 3 inch wennerae mantis be kept together without problems?I've read that some mantis are fine together.I would have them in a 5 gallon tank for now. They are pinky finger size. The lfs gave him to me since I spotted him in a rock in thier seahorse tank and helped remove it.

Provide lots and lots of rock work for them to live in. The more holes they have to live in the less likely they will fight about it. In a few years they will be up to 3 inches. I'm not sure what will happen then but if it were me I would separate them when they get too big.

in a word no. I have seen them live together in a tank but If you are putting them in a 5 gallon the chances that they will figh are evtremely high. I would get seperate tanks and plumb them togeather.

I had three, two red and one green. After several days I had one red and one green. I think the colors mark the sexes, as several weeks later I had a tank full of fry (None survived more than a few days).

My pair survived for months in a ten gallon until the heater broke and one got fried. Anyway I think if they are opposite sexes they will get along, same sex, one is dinner.

brekurboy1 and dwarfatize are both essentially correct. Stomatopods are generally a territorial species that will claim and defend a home (cave/burrow) and then actively hunt near it. Aggressive territorial behavior is almost always inflamed in a small environment. As mentioned, you reduce the risk of fighting/death by providing LOTS of rockwork so that each can find a home away from the other. As also mentioned, a 5g might be too small, you might consider bumping up to a 10, and even then don't be surprised if one becomes lunch (eventually).

Here is an article outlining how mantis behavie in regards to territory and space:

As a side note, here's a short article I found about mantis & visual/colors:

i have a 10g, w/about 8 pounds of lr in it. it has a n. wennerae in it, and a small other mantis in it. they've been together for about a month. they are different species so i dont know if that makes a difference. the wennerae is full grown, and the other one is like 1/1/2 inches long and blue/purple, i have no idea what type that is.....just my 2cents

I would really go with a 20 long for 2 N wennerae with 2 distinct areas of rock work on opposite sides of the tank. What I have that's not finished looks like this from the top. I've made this tank from left over 1/4" inch lexan.

three sections in the front divided with lexan and a refugium in the back with overflow and stuff. The whole system is powered with a 5-15 regent filter from walmart slightly modified. I'll put some pics up. All my N. Wennerae stuck in 2 liter bottle will live here when it's finished being built.
