He should be fine. Not hairy, not black tip claws, but the one thing is that his claws are narrow. More of a snip claw than a crush claw.

I can't ID him, so I'm really not sure. Take the above with a grain of salt.

looks like a good crab, possible a red mithrax.

I think both are some kind of Mithrax.

I have a book that shows 5 different ones and do be aware that 2 of them get to be 4-6 inches.

the ones we normaly see stay small....

the other possiblity for the first crab is

Nimble Spray Crab
Percnon gibbesi
also commonly known as the Urchin Crab as they often hide under / behind an urchin.

but the photo I have in my book is not really great....
so might be a Mithrax or the urchin crab.

Are the 2 that get 4-6 inches Caribbean/Gulf mithrax crabs? I should post a picture of the Mithrax that scared the $#@!! out of me because it has gotten BIG.

YES

I have two books at home I can post the ISBN for them tonight

Paul Humann (sp) they are photo ID books, one is fish, the other is "critters" like crabs, shrimp, stars, sponge, tunicates etc....

I have to get his #3 book on corals sometime.

all of them are gulf, Bahama, crarib area and mention where each animal is common or not common. (by location, habitat)
very good books for tbs rock stuff.

Denny, I'm not seeing a link. Can you please re-post? I've heard of those Paul Humann books and they have a very good reputation.
