Can you keep a trigger together?

I'm getting a 180gal tank, my main reason for this is to obtain and keep a Blue ringed angel. My question is what other fish are good to keep with this angel, and is it ok to keep triggers with angels? Opinions and experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First off welcome to Rc. yes it is possible to keep that fish with a trigger depending on what trigger you wanted.

Queens are mean as their reputation. Clowns are a much better bet for a angel. I have 3 triggers with 3 angels currently.

Personally I'd avoid clown triggers. Though a magnificent animal they are infamous for deciding that they want the tank to themselves and killing everything else. Granted there are people who successfully keep them, but you should be aware of the risk.

At this point it is tame as tame gets. I've seen both types of CT's and this one is not the 'mean version' and I'd be suprised if it took a 180 and became so.

3 wrasses - coris, lyretail, tusk
3 angels - majestic, scribble, maculosus

Clowns are really territorial. A clown may be able to co-exist with other fish for a time... but it is a gamble and or a time bomb... you might get lucky... but I would not risk it in my own tank.

Queens are out right ferrocious though. Queens will attack divers who are 5-6 times their size... they will attack them in the open ocean when there are millions of gallons of water around them.

Also... the grow fast and get huge... you can expect the fish to get close to 2' in length... 2' fish... 6' tank...:eek2:

A 180 is actually a bit to small for an adult sized queen. I wouldn't buy one with a tank much smaller than 300 gallons... unless you plan on upgrading or know someone willing to take the fish once it gets too big... this is harder than it sounds... no one wants a super mean 2' fish...(I would love to have one... but msot people wouldn't)

Also queens eat a ton... you better have a top rate skimmer and or do frequent waterchanges.

In all fairness...
There is no such thing as a "mean" or "nice" version.

The fish have complex genetic and behavioral cues. A nice fish is still programmed to go off in certain ways. If the fish happens to find the right cue it will go ballistic... you might get lucky and avoid them but clown triggers are omnivorous predators, piscavores, and territorial hunters. All it takes is for them to get hungry one day... :uzi:

Some specimens may be more mellow - but it's not something you can judge intrinsically by just watching the fish for a few hours - it is much more complex than that. These fish have a killer instinct and it is not entirely clear what sets it off... but make no mistake, it is there. They might be accustomed or imprinted on other tank mates... but small changes in tank dynamics can stir up big trouble.

What size tank is it? looks around 240g+

By clowns i mean anemone fish.

The angels may bully some kinds of clowns... I would stay away from the most peaceful ones but go with the semi-aggressive species or aggressive depending on the type of angel.

Tangs range from very peaceful to very aggressive so there are tangs that would work well and those that would not. I would do research on specific species, find a few you like and figure out if those would work. Some tang species are very difficult to keep, but there are several that are quite a bit easier.
