Can you put a canopy on a rimless tank?

Why not hang a fixture above it so you dont hide your rim. Why have a unique rim if you dont show off your unique rim?

thanks. I ordered one a couple weeks ago with these intentions, but just read something of the net on how some guy said that his rimless split at the seam because of the weight of his canopy. I just wanted to make sure this is common practice.

I like the look of a canopy. Besides my wife would give me so much grief as it took me about 4-5 months to finish making the stand and canopy. I'm a little slow at the carpentry. The only reason the tank is rimless is because it was cheaper to have it made this way.:)

If it was cheaper to have it made rimless, you might have a problem. Who is making your tank? Generally, you need to size up one size in glass to go rimless (i.e. 3/4" glass for the size of tank you would go 1/2" if braced), which makes going rimless more expensive by quite a bit. How thick is your glass and what are the dimensions of your tank? If it is not proper thickness, Id try to have eurobracing added now.

To your original question, I concur with the above poster that it is a waste to put a canopy on a rimless tank. I know you made the canopy, but in economic terms, this is a sunk cost. IMO scrap the canopy and go with what looks best. Check out the rimless tanks I posted here, the will convince your wife ;) : http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1312542

aslong as u still have all ur fingers...its ok.....lol

Its really a personal preference, but the main reason I would go rimless is to show it off ... I like the clean lines etc. If you are putting a canopy on the tank I would think you could go with slightly thinner glass and add a eurobrace for strength. Not to mention, I have structural reservations putting a canopy on a rimless tank.
