IT HAS BEGUN!!!!!

The building of a ~570 gallon peninsula tank!!!

The tank is being built elsewhere, but I am making the stand and canopy for it.

Due to the high volume of requests, I will be making a build thread. Unfortunately the batteries on my digital were out so I only got some pics from today.

Here is the frame, 90% finished. All that remains is the plywood floor inside and the 3/4" plywood top where the tank sits (flatbottom starfire (sp?) tank).

There is a 48" framing square sitting on top for scale.

The stand is almost 11 feet long, and 40-1/2" wide to accomidate a 36"x120" tank.

The ugly looking center braces were added after most everything was done at the request of the tank maker for extra support around the central overflow. Last minute design change.

More to follow!!!

you should have used more wood.

What???? There are 18-2x4x10', 2-2x12x12, 3-2x8x12'

not to mention four boxes of decking screws!!!!

This thing already weighs over 300 pounds!!!!

when you are ready for the colored sticks, come by, i have a few larger colonies ill part with also.. i need more room...

well I will volunteer to help move it now. looks like you will need more people than you had for moon stand

BTW I can probally get a box truck if we do it on a saturday morning

OK, got most of the maple today and got started on the doors. Only one side will have functioning doors, the other side's doors will not function.

Here is the stand on it's side (almost couldn't flip it by myself) with the doors laying in place. Enough to get the idea of what it will look like. Thing looks so small because I had to be across the room to get it all!!

Doing the other side and the front tomorrow. Then I'll start on the canopy!! Probably 25% done now.

Stay tuned!!

It looks great!

Floor has been reinforced so this thing does not wind up in the basement.

The new wood floor is sitting in the living room waiting for installation.

It is getting closer and closer to time for a tank raising party!

don't forget the most importaint part... power back up.. I am currently standing on the street waiting for com ed to get our power back up... we have been down for an hour now.. I stupidly don't have a backup power.. right now I have very long extensioncords to an area that has power.... I'm typing this on pda following the comed guy down the street while he checks main boxes...woo woo..and its starting to rain...

BTW thanks for the offer to help move it whiirly

We are definately going to need some help.

thx for the offer.. will be moving the generator up on the list..
power is back up.. pretty lucky i was .. this time... sorry to hijack..
this thing looks like its gonna be GREAT.. sorry i cant offer to help lift it.. but if you want to tak about any of the processes or pluming etc.. just let me know..

I am planning for a moving company to put the tank in place. The only thing I will move is the stand.

When it is time I plan to hire the best aquascaper out there (Rod) and have a party to watch it all come together. The Party will be for fun not to work!

canar - I'm pretty close to Elmhurst, and I can help ya move the stand. Just LMK in advance when you'd like to move it.

Also....is the tank glass or acrylic? (I am assuming it's glass if you need to hire a moving company...)

The Frog- It looks like you can park a semi on that thing! :eek1:

hans was a great help with moving my 600. Thank you Garen. If you need an extra set of MAN hands, give him a shout.....

disclaimer:I am not shilling for hansnfrans. I just greatly appreciated his help and am in no way affiliated with him except through the following:
1)friendship
2)OT club
3)fellow reefer
4) idolizing him
That is all. Thank you

damn, that thing looks heavy. nice work. I am glad that some big guys are offering help. I am wondering how hard it will be to get the tank in place without someone smashing fingers in the trim work. Grog, is there a way that the upper trim can be attached after the tank is in place?

Yea, try turning it on it's side and back a few times!!!! All the maple isn't even on it yet and I can barely move it! As I told Canar, I only build 'em, he is responsible for finding a way to get it moved......although I will help......for beer.....or frags!!!

As for the trim, already planned ahead for that. What you see at the top-front now is flush with the top surface. Got another layer to put there still of 3/4" plywood (where the tank sits on) and a surrounding "shelf" that is also 3/4" thick....with nice rounded edges. The top surface where the tank sits will be totally flush and the surrounding trim will be added after the tank is in place via wood dowels/pegs.

Thanks for all the complements guys! Glad a lot of people are wanting to help!! Things are moving along fast so it looks like my deadline of next weekend will be a reality! :eek1: :bounce1:

yznhmr....sucks about the power thing. Had a similiar thing happen when we lived in Springfield last year when the tornados went though. Was up every hour all night manually aerating the water. Still don't have a backup power source. Going to look into a UPS as soon as our Florida move is done (for the sump pump only) and then probably a generator as soon as a few paychecks come in. Hope everything went well!

Well, I have a date with a router and a lot of sandpaper!!!
