Hello reef central community,

I wanted to get feed back from any of you who have gone to any of the cancun resorts. Im planning our family trip this summer sometime in june or july. I want to stay away from the mega resorts and find a place that has smaller villas close to the beach. There will be kids going on this trip, so i want to introduce them to the wonderful underwater world on this trip, so i would like there to be some quality snorkeling close to the beach. Also, some sight seeing trips, jungle tours or maya ruins viewing would be nice. If you have been to any of these places, i would love to hear about your experience.

-Thanks
Alfredo

We took the kids to Now Jade Resorts last summer on the Riviera de Maya(Just south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen). Take the kids to snorkel at Puerto Morales. This place is the second largest reef in the world. You go out to the reef and have two 45 min snorkel times. Trust me, you will be tired after two 45 min sessions because the water moves alot.

You can do other trips to Cozumel and surrounding areas for more snorkeling and dives...

If you go back another time without kids, go to El Dorado Royale and stay in the Casitas. We are going here for the 2nd time in 3 years.....no kids allowed :)

I have been to Cancun 3 times and stayed at LeBlanc last year. We lucked into the resort and if you look it up you will understand why it is the top rated resort.

The waves can be pretty rough depending on where you are staying but there are some tours that you can take that include snorkeling.

I have done many and some are better than others. If you come up with a list I could recommend some.

I cannot help on where to eat though since the only restaurants I have eaten at outside the resorts were for the Folk Ballet and the pirate ship lobster cruise that sails at night in the lagoon.

Make sure to book a private van from the airport to your hotel. It may cost just a little more ($80 plus tip) but no stress.

Enjoy.

My GF and I stayed at El Cid this past December. It is a larger resort, but very nice. We did snorkling on the reef and it was fun. They don't allow you to swim off the shore to the reef. We had to take a boat and did a 2 hour trip with the resort.

I did use USA Charters for the hotel transfer from the hotel. Well worth the $70. PM me if you need any more details.
