candy cane coral

i just got a colony of candy cane coral, and was wondering if anyone had any tips as to placement in a tank or any added information on them. i have been searching the internet but there is not a lot of info on them.

I have my candy cane under about a foot of water with 4x Tek T5 bulbs, and it's growing quite nicely. It's in an area of moderate water flow. From what little I've read, they seem to be pretty tolerant of various levels of lighting and flow. I've had a hard time finding much written information on them as well. I don't suppose anyone out there knows the scientific name. That would probably help.

i have a smaller tank only a 30g with 30lbs of live rock, and about a 2inches of live sand. i have 3 T5 bulbs and one is atnic. my pH is around 8.1, sailinity is about 1.022. and the rest of the nitrites, nitrates , nH3 are almost zero. i just go the candy cane coral off ebay for a great price, and thought i would give a try. some articles online say they need high light. A pet store down by me says they propagate best under low to moderate lighting. For those of you out there with candy coral. do they spread slowly or what do they do exactly. Also i have read they have sweeper tentacles at night is this true?

yes they have feeders, and they can get pretty long in hevy current. The more you feed it the faster and lager it grow.

They divide their heads: you'll see two mouths, then a narrowing 'waist' between them, an '8' shape, and then two complete heads. This can go on until it makes a sort of semi-ball.

I have mine about 16 inches down from a 250 watt mh, and it's happy and growing, turning a bit blueish. The sweepers aren't as long as bubble or galaxia, but don't put anything up right against it. It tolerates pretty good flow but doesn't like to be in a gale; and to feed it, fine-chop some ordinary frozen people-food shrimp and use an eyedropper to get it to each head. It will do fine without that amenity, but a fed coral grows faster. They are tough, and rarely bother their neighbors, a good first lps. When lights have been out about half an hour, take a flashlight and get a look at it, and you will see how it changes character. Its other name is 'trumpet coral,' I believe.

I just purchased a Candy Cane myself. The way I found a good spot for him was to break of a single polyp and split there location on opposite sides of the tank until I found a spot that they seem to prefer.

well i have had mine a month now, and they have already split, and one of the heads has begun the figure eight postion so i assume its about to split up to. They are very interesting to watch. the sweeper tentacles only are about 1/4" on mine. i have been using frozen formula one food on them with a dropper to feed. the color is amazing. i have them on the side of the tank opposite to the jet.

How about some pictures?
I recently purchased a "Candy Cane" from a fellow reefer that was moving that looks so-so, but I don't know what a good healthy one looks like.

Here are a couple pictures of mine. Of course, there are quite a few different types of Caulastrea (candy cane, trumpet, etc) out there, so I'm not sure this is the particular one you have. I believe this is C. furcata, but I'm really not sure.

And here's a picture showing the head start to split about a month and a half later (sorry it's a little blurry)

nice pictures. i started feeding mine mysid shrimp at night when the tentacles first come out, and it has really made them grow quite a bit i think. I have mine in low-med light with a medium current and they love it.

Yeah, once I started feeding mine, I saw the same thing. I give him a bit of mysis, krill, silverside (small bit) about every other night. Then I give my cleaner shrimp two of whatever I gave my candy cane so he won't go clepto on me.

i have some with those white stripes... one frag consists of 10 polyps and the other has 3... i think both are the same frag broken off at the petshop... i bought both of them... i have the 13 heads under ~14 inches of water directly under a 150w MH light... i have the 3 heads up higher at only 4 inches below the water line but off to the side... a couple of weeks ago, i had the 3 heads under my frogspawn... the frogspawn was obviously shadowing the candy canes from the light... i noticed that even though the coral is still very fluffy, the white lines started fading away... that's why i moved it so it can get more light...

also with the 13 heads, i have the stalk placed diagonally, so that some polyps get more light than those at the bottom... i noticed that the white lines on the bottom part of one polyp that get the least amount of light is very faint to non existant...
