went away for 4 days and came back and 2 of the 4 heads have receded. all other coral is doing great. Params are good, Am 0, Nitrate 0, nitrite 0, pH 8.1

any help is appreciated

IMO, it might be too much light. 85% is very powerful. Might want to give it a dip in Revive or Lugols and place them low in the tank, maybe even shaded and see how it does. Doing this process, you need to feed it.

Sounds good to me I'll dip the light and a place lower in the tank should I be feeding it mysis directly

Yes you can feed it Mysis directly. The best way is to wait about 30 minutes after lights out when the tentacles come out. Cut your powerheads and return pump off. They will benefit from occasional feedings. I feed mine twice a week. Anything from Mysis, Krill, Brine Shrimp, Reef Chili, and Cyclopeeze.

Not sure if this is what's happening, but mine will contract like that and expel what looks like poop. They are back to normal a couple hours later. I think it's just how tubastrea get rid of solid waste. Your polyps don't really look like they're receding. Just contracted...

Candy canes are genus Caulastrea. Tubastrea are nonphotosynthetic sun corals.

I have both, and have also noticed polyps sometimes being moody around expelling processed ingested items.
