Canister + bulkhead?

Good evening, friends. Has anyone put an overflow box with teeth inside their fish tank, with a hole and a bulkhead in the tank, and connected that system to a canister? Would it work?

I have never done so but, as long as the water level in the tank remained above the bottom of the overflow weir, it should work. I don't know how effective it would be at surface skimming but would be interesting to find out.
