canister filter and skimmer

Hi Guys,

just after some help, i've added a fluval 205 to my tank and since doing so last tusday my small nano skimmer (TMC nano skim) has stopped producing foam and skimmate.

i'm running carbon and GFO in the cannister and have removed the bio media as i have plenty of live rock.

any idea why this could have happened.

Cheers

something apparently changed with your water chemistry, maybe you have a small enough bioload that with the addition of the canister, there are few enough proteins in the water that your skimmer is no longer efficient enough to remove any? Did anything else in the tank change?

Well, the canister might be taking some stuff out of the water, but from what I can tell, this is not a great skimmer. GENERALLY, "nano" skimmers are not too good, and this could be adding to the problems it is having creating a foam.

Is there a specific reason that you added the canister filter? Usually people stray away from them as they can become "nitrate factories" unless properly maintained.

well, i've been having plague proportions of hair algae. i've been "told" on a reef forum i use thats based in the uk that the best way is to reduce phosphates and use a reactor.

my tank is only 25 gallons and i don't have much room in the back for extra pumps (i'll one day create a tank post) so i thought instead of using a reactor that could potentially flood my tank onto my floor (resulting in a divorce) i'd use a canister filter, strip the bio media out and use it purely as chemical filter and still make use of the foam screen that the water initially passes over.
on the subject of chemical media i forgot to mention that i have also put a bag of sea chem phosguard ( the aluminium based white beads) in the filter.

i've just done a 15 litre water change so i'm waiting for the water to clear as i type. As its only a 94 litre tank i do a water change once a week ( i grunt when i haul 20 litres which is my usual amount, how do you guys with huge tanks manage?) so when i do my water change on a monday afternoon i planned on cleaning out the canister. As i do all my "jobs" around the house on a monday morning it gives me the afternoon to play with the tank.

back to the original topic though, could my canister be removing all that waste. My bio load is very light with only a pair of clowns in the tank. the system is a year old with the clowns being in about 10-10.5 months.

only got a couple of frags in due to cost of corals over here and with financial constraints.

thanks for your kind responses so far, better then the usual i get :)

Cheers

wow that's a really small bioload. my guess would be yer canister is pulling out a lot of the stuff your skimmer used to pull out... how long have you cycled yer live rock for? just curious because you previously had an algae outbreak. probably the GFO you put in the cannister is pulling a lot of the phosphates out that you previously had?

I have a 55 gallon reef tank w/ 4 fish, multiple corals and 90# of live-rock....and I only use 2 Marineland Magnum 350 below tank canister filters and all of my levels are consistent at 0, even my Nitrates. Your canister filter can most likely handle your entire system the way you have it set up right now, without issue.

i suspect the phos and carbon medias in the canister are removing a little of the crap the skimmer was trying to remove and the chemical media is doing a better job, i suspect the skimmer will soon start to work again, you should be pleased the water is pretty clean, enjoy, things can change quite quickly.

I think your probably right, with such a small bioload the cannister is probably handling it pretty well, the live rock was pretty well cured when i put it in last year. the tank has been wet with rock in for 1 year and i left it for a month to 6 weeks before i added the clowns.

gave the rocks a good scrub to get rid of the algae i have ( its was still pretty horrific this morning) but nows its looking sparkly clean.

Still some way to go till its perfect but i'm very happy with the results i'm getting.

~Cheers

Glad you've come to terms with your situation! I love canister filters, no matter what anyone else may say...ha.
