canister filter questions

which ones do you like the best? Rena, Jebo, Fluval, I am thinking Xp3 but if there are others that are just as good for less especially ebay i would like some input. i am looking for at least 350gph

I personally wouldn't use a cannister filter on a reef. A f/o yes. And if using it for occational water clearing or for running as a media reactor. They tend to have the same problems as bioballs, biowheels, and wet/dry filters do.

without a reef ready tank and no room for a sump since it is a hex what other filtration option do i have

if I were you

I would put live rock in there stacked loose so that nothing can accumulate between the rocks

buy a seio 1100

than the skimmer that you choose

and do normal water changes and the tank can sustain itself if you don't overfeed or have to many fish in there

the fluvals are great! I run Purigen as well as phosguard/phosban and carbon almost 24/7. I do switch up the media-just remember to remove the pads-then it becomes just extra water volume and flow for your tank. Think of it as a power head that you can put chemical/natural media in. Good luck

They're great for a media chamber it's just that the little ceramec bacteria growing media material does just that and competes with the good filtration of the rock itself. End result is high nitrates.

I have used Fluval's for years. Great product. The one on my freshwater tank has been running for about 15-16 years! Great product.

do you do this on a reef tank or Fw. i am thinking full blown reef softies, lps, clams etc

also if some dont recomend the canister filter, i already have a hang on power fliter, could this be used instead of buying a new filter. it is a aqua clear 300 although i would have any room for a skimmer to hang on

yes I run it on a full blown reef. I do not use it as it was intended though. I took out the ceramic cylinders and the foam pads and run other media in there(the ones I mentioned before). Hang on to the little ceramic cylinders though-they make great little frag plugs. Good luck

i shouldnt even run a coarse sponge? is it a good idea to put some rubble rock in there since i will have about 6lbs. i will be tearing down my nano cube and i have all those chambers full in the back full with rock and 1 sponge

ditch the sponge and you could put some rubble in the containers, I use small rocks to hold my purigen in place. good luck
