Canister Filter

I have a cascade 1000 I have been using with another canister for filtration. Everyone has been telling me its suicide so I finally returned one and am going to get a sump with the money. As for the cascade I bought it used so cant return it. Is there anything I can use it for or should I just try and sell it.

LR ,LS and water changes combined with skimmer and regular testing and no addtional filtration needed. I use a smal HOB filter with crabon for extra ammonia control and particulate collection. If you have any nitrate problems then the canisters would be one cause.

you can use the canister filter as long as you clean it every week. the problem people have with canister filters is that they clean then too infrequently and the particles that the filter collect are still in contact with the water, break down and impact water quality. if your willing to clean the filter at least every week you should be fine

The LR in the cannister can still trap a lot of detritus. It is also an oxygen rich environment, so you have a lot of aerobic bacteria breaking ammonia down to nitrate, but the environment doesn't have anaerobic bacteria breaking nitrate down to nitrite and then to nitrogen gas.

The canisters are very efficient at turning ammonia into nitrate, but usually produce nitrate faster than the anaerobic bacteria in the rest of your system can handle.

I run mine in a sump, after my filter sock, so that it doesn't take in too much detritus. I'm thinking about selling it on ebay and getting a carbon reactor. Used canisters seem to do pretty well on ebay, FWIW.
