canister filters

whats your views on them? im thinking of getting one from fostersmith but i wanted your guys opinion on it first.

They tend to trap nitrates. I have used them in the past, and have always switched to a refugium. I even had a hang on fuge for my 45 gal. The macro and lr work great for nitrate export.

I run a 1200 gph canister to filter out detritus and particulates. If you keep it clean, your nitrates will be ok.

I think that for carbon only it would be good as long as you clean it out every week or so, otherwise I think it will generate too many trates. I would go with a fuge like Todd mentioned for the main filtration.

A good healthy sandbed will take care of the detritus, but a canister for carbon is not a bad idea. Although I run my carbon in my sump near my fuge. There are many ways of doing this, and none of them are wrong. We just throw out ideas that seem to work for us.

my only problem is i have an aquapod and the canister filter seemed the only way to go seeing as how i cant have any hang on stuff
