Ok I have the fluval 405 got sold on it by a salesman Was told onhere they arenot really needed and could be more harm then use. SO after me getting my two powerheads yesterday I was thinking of taking it out totally I have carbon init and that is it. But it seems kinda Dumb to me to run that big filter for just carbon.

So will it do any damage taking it out?
I was using it after hearing I did not need it as a water mover.

I still use mine just for carbon and flow no problems here but make sure the mechanicals pads and the biological balls or whatever are takin out of it

I'd keep it only if you want to use it as a chemical filter. I have a 205 and use it as a carbon and Rowa phos reactor.

It works great but I clean it every two weeks to keep down NO3.

When you clean it you empty out the water ? I see that things takes alot of water

So should I put anything else in there besides carbon?

Get a 5 gallon bucket or so and dump the water in there clean it then dump the water back in it,and no dont put anything else in there but carbon, alot of people suggest live rock but as long as you have enough in the tank i wouldnt use anything else in it but carbon

I usually never have an dirty water in it, i pour it out in a bucket rinse and wipe the canister and pour the water back in it

Live rock rubble is a good filler, but make it pretty big pieces, so as not to have accumulation of crud.

I think I am with you Rgun I should just do away with it It seems to me it might be more of a headache and more work Just wanted to make surre would not do no harm

Yes, Convenient way to do a water change. Just fill it with new water when you're done cleaning it.
