canister on a nano reef

RCers,

I have a canister filter that i used on a 55g FOWLR tank that I just recently down sized from, and will be starting a 24gnano. WOuld this be okay to stock with charcoal and some phosphate binding product? I am worried about this being a nitrate trap. Or should I maybe just put LR rubble in the baskets. Opinions? Everything would be running ino the back comparments of the nano.

It's only the mechanical filter part (ie. sponges) that will be a nitrate factory, you would be alright using activated carbon and phosban with it. You could also place LR rubble in it. If the canister cannot operate without a sponge, you can still use it so long as you clean it about twice a week. I would clean the canister itself about once a month to remove any trapped detritus anyway. I would also clean it before using it at all considering that it was on a FOWLR, so it is probably fairly scumy.
