Canon 100mm Vs. Sigma 105mm

I have asked for the canon 100 mm for X-mas, and when the call was placed, the rep said that the new 105mm from Sigma was a step up from that. I have a XTi, and I love it, but I want to get some better shots with a good macro. I have seen some pics with the Canon, but I am wondering about the quality of the Sigma. I have to oppertunity to get either. Is the Sigma really better because of the price tag being twice as much? Being a Canon user, it is hard to go with something other than Canon, especially when reputation is a big part of it. Can anyone chime in here and let me know which is actually the better lens?

First thing I did was go to the Sigma forum on dpreview. Then the first thread I read was about communication problems between the lens and the camera body. This has happened to a couple people and would worry me but-- Sigma has improved their reputation quite a bit in the last few years and they've improved their product line too. In the old days they had a terrible reputation. Nowadays though they've got some lenses that outperform first party counterparts so I wouldn't dismiss them just because it's not a Canon. Two good things I see about that lens right off- it's lighter and shorter than the Canon. Now I've got to do some more digging.

Thanks for the replys. I visited other boards and got some info there as well. It seems no one has done any side by side comparisons, yet.

Blazer, I saw that thread as well, but it really didnt convince me that the Sigma features justified being twice the cost. In the end, I will more than likely go with the Canon.
