Canon 50D or 40D with lens

Hello all,
This is my first post in the photography section. I have been looking at some of the pics you guys have posted and am just blown away. My wife wants a DSLR for Christmas. I was thinking a 50D but after reading several posts, I am thinking about going with the 40d and getting a macro lens. Am I better off springing the extra cash for the 50 or going with the 40? Thanks.

I personally have the 40D and love it. No matter what you get, the 100mm Macro is going to be at the top of your list concerning tank shots. Posting pictures is easy!

1) Go to photobucket.com and register (for free).
2) Upload pictures to Photobucket.
3) Click the "IMG code" link under the picture, your computer will automatically copy the text. *You may have to tell Photobucket to display the "IMG code" link if it asks.
4) Paste the text in the Reply box.

I am sure flicker has a similar process but I do not know it.

Would you recomend the canon glass or another brand?

Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro for your tank. The Sigma 150mm Macro is another option though.

For everything besides coral...well there are over 100 options to choose from just from Caonon.

50D imo , if you can afford the better body y not.

I too have a D-40 and it's pretty good camera. I still need a macro lens...hum! santa???????

Haha nonono The D40 and 40D are two totally different cameras.

Unfortunately the Nikon D40 seems to be plagued with auto focus compatibility issues.

I think the reason he is questioning between to two is that the 50D isn't the 40D 2.0, it is more like the 40D 1.2. The 30D was a similar upgrade to the 20D...not much. So for the price difference, he is wondering if the extra money is worth the mediocre benefits.

Here is the basic question: Is $300 worth 5 extra megapixels, a better viewing screen on the back, and (slightly) lower frames per second bursts?

Don't forget the micro adjustments on the 50D, that is a huge benefit.

Oh yes yes yes, how could I forget! Lenses do vary. The infamous "batter test" will show any font focus/back focus on a lens. Basically if your lens isn't exactly on par with what it should be focusing wise, you can tell your camera to compensate. This is an enormous benefit and I humbly apologize for not including it. If I was faced with a 40D/50D delima, I would buy the 50D. To others, the extra good just doesn't outweigh the price.

The micro adjustments was something that I was very interested in as well as the VGA screen which is great. But if I had to choose between a 50D w/kit lens or 40D w/100mm F2.8 macro I would take the 40D any day. Good glass will make the shot as any of the DSLR bodies are more than sufficient to take great pictures.

They got tired of all the pixel peepers sending their L's back, so they fixed it in camera!

I bit the bullet and went with the 50d. The macro lens will be here Monday. Thanks for all the help and advice. I am sure I will be asking for more once i get to taking some pics.

That is the even better option, 50D plus macro lens. Be sure to post up some samples when you get everything. The 50D is a great camera, I know I'm loving mine.
