Canon Announces 1000D

It is a great deal, but if the price keeps dropping there has to be some quality loss. They are shooting themselves in the foot by doing this IMO. It seems great to make an inexpensive DSLR to appeal to Point and shooters, but i can't help but think they're cutting too many corners somewhere. I am baffled. I don't see the appeal to this camera besides...cheap. The value of the Xti also just fell through the basement as well. With (2) "successors" in the 1000D and 450D, who would buy one?

In other world news, check out the slick new 430 EXII! :D

Huh.....looks an awful lot like the Nikon D40/D40x. Maybe Canon feels that they are missing out on a market that other companies (Nikon, Olympus, and Sony) are fairly entrenched in. Don't know why they would want to but whatever, that's the way the market works.

I never was a fan of the D40, and I've got the same feeling for this 1000D. Might be nice as a backup or a "grab and go" kit....but otherwise, meh. Not impressed.

Canon will probably release the 1100D in a month the way they are currently throwing camera's at the market. I'm a bit mythed at this too.

I think they need to worry about bringing out the 5d MkII

Well the 5D MkI has no peer. Nikon...Olympus...Sony...nobody has anything to compare the 5D to. It is a class all to its own, so Canon is biding its time concerning the issue. They made a breakthrough with the Rebel, bringing DSLR affordability where no other company would. A 5D MKII would be nice but even that name is a complete fabrication of overanxious fans. Canon isn't stupid, and I actually think they will sell a lot of these cameras. I see on this forum every day people asking for a "do all camera" for $100. The 1000D takes them one step closer to a professional-looking camera that is very inexpensive. Even though no professional would ever touch it.

It is baffling. I'm an Oly guy and I think they should have just competitively priced the Xti kit to compete in the entry level market. B&H still has the 400D with the non IS 18-55 lens for $675. That's not competitive enough.
