Canon Extension Tube Question

Awesome, thanks Greg. The little bit I read confused me by leading me to believe that it wouldn't work with a "smaller" lens.

I also see that Kenko makes extension tubes as well that are compatible with Canon. Amazon has an offer for three different Kenko tubes ($163) for a little more than the Canon 25mm ($123). So I have two questions: in your opinion,

1. Are extension tubes in general worth the money?
2. Are the Kenko tubes just as good as the Canon?

The Canon tube is built better but most people, me included, get the Kenkos. I've never heard that you can't use extension tubes with any Canon lens, EF-S or regular EF mount so you should be ok. Personally I think tubes are a good value but it depends on how much you like to shoot close-ups and whether or not you already have a macro lens. Since you don't have a macro lens then I'd say get either the tubes or a 500D close-up filter. The 500D is a little cheaper but not as versatile as the set of tubes-- you'll be able to get greater magnification with the tubes.

Greg, have you ever tried the 18-55 with the Kenko tubes? I know my 60mm F/2.8 won't work and it has the EF-S mount. I imagine any lens that has the EF-S mounts won't work.

I've not heard that - I'll dig around and see what I can find out..............................................................................................................................
I found a reference to the Canon 25mm tube- it will work with the EF-S mount, however the Kenko tubes do not- sorry! Glad you didn't buy them and find out the hard way.
Phew.

So the Kenko tubes are a no for my 18-55mm EFS kit lens?

Update: Its true, the Kenko tubes will not work on the EF-S lenses. I found it on the THKphoto website :(

josh, you should just save up a few more bucks.....and then get the canon 50mm f/2.5 macro lens (~$240). then you can always get the kenko extension tubes for that lens sometime in the future.

since the width of your 55g tank is only 12inches, that 50mm macro lens should do just fine IMO.

As Oct said, the new Kenko set does support efs lenses. Thats the same set I have.

One issue to consider is, you really lose DOF (depth of field) when using extension tubes. macro shots already have tiny DOF. Tubes make it smaller still.

As far as quality, kenko vs canon. Its a no brainer. Go for kenko You are only adding hollow tubes - no lenses/glass. IQ will not take a hit.

You are also getting 3 different sizes with the kenko, and they can be mixed and matched for varying sizes.

Hope this helps.

While waiting to be graced with a real macro lense I've been using Kenko tubes on my XTi.

On the box for my tubes it says "For Canon-EOS EF/EFS". As advertised it fits onto the 18-55mm EF-S.

For the price (~$100) I am happy with what these have done. I've been a little lazy with some of my pictures yet have been impressed with some of my shots. Since I know I've got a macro lens on the way I was ok to buy these, and together they will make a nice set up.

These are all handheld (Tripiod is on the christmas list) with extension tubes...
