Canon lens help

Are you sure about that camera model number? I'm not familiar with it. Regardless, if the camera in question is a dslr or slr and not a point and shoot then that is an excellent lens, especially for the money.

That's the model number mom read off the camera while dad wasn't around :D ....I think it isn't new, so maybe that's why? Do the lenses fit older cameras?

Hmm- I did some searching and the only hit I found was for a medical camera, but no pictures of the camera itself. Without actually seeing a picture of the camera or finding the specs for it I'm very hesitant to tell you to get that lens. Yes it's a very good lens but I am not familiar with the camera so I don't know if it will work on it. I'm familiar with all the slr/dslr consumer and professional bodies Canon has made going back about 15 years and that's not one of them. It could be a model number from overseas though- sometimes Canon issues different model numbers for the states.

Bingo! You are correct, he bought it in Europe this summer. Will that be an issue for lens fit? Thanks for the help, BTW :)

I searched some more and didn't find a firm answer on this but it's looking like what we know as a 10D. The 10D and 17-40 are an excellent combo- I own both :p Still, though, I'd be happier if I found a concrete answer on this. Do you know for a fact that the camera uses interchangeable lenses? Do you have any idea how much he paid for it? If it was the equivalent of about $1000 U.S. then it's gotta be a 10D.

Ok- then the answer to your question is yes
The 17-40 is a great lens. If your Dad has been getting by with the 24-85 he will be very very happy with the optical quality of the 17-40. I'd say over half the landscapes on my webpage were made with that lens.

Yup. That's a great lens but it's not really all that wide on a crop body camera, like the 10D. You might also consider the Tokina 12-24. That was my bread and butter lens before I upgraded to a full frame camera. That lens was actually one of the reasons why I put off upgrading for as long as I did.

Cheers

Thanks Doug. Well, I already ordered the 17-40. I'll show him the info on the 12-24 in case he is interested after xmas. Thanks for the help.

What about a 10-22 or 3rd party 10-20 Sigma? I love the 10-22 on my 40D, I'm sure it would be considered an "L" if it wasn't EFs.

EDIT: after reading everything I see you went with the 17-40 f/4 L instead. That is an Amazing lens as well. The Tunze of its focal length. :)
