Canon Lens questions...

I have the 100mm canon, it's a great lens but it's also challenging to get good macro shots with it, any camera movement, poor choice of shutter speed, or aperture will give you a frown. The other lenses (60mm and 180mm) are also great lenses but there are, as stated above several tradeoffs. The 180mm is expensive and heavy. On the other hand it is an L lens and is capable of sharper images than the 100mm, it's build is higher quality with environmental seals and as stated can shoot 1:1 at a farther distance from the subject. The 60mm is a dedicated macro lens and is exceptional. It's good for nothing else. It's not much of an aquarium lens as the max working distance at 1:1 is 3.5". It also requires very bright illumination to take quality shots (dedicated flashes).

I had the EF-s 60mm for years and it works just like any other 60mm prime lens. Some of my favorite shots were taken with that lens and certainly doesn't require dedicated flashes. I think people are getting the EF-s 60mm F/2.8 confused with the MPE-65, which is a dedicated 5x macro lens. The EF-s 60mm is just like the 100mm but with a shorter working distance.

I would also recommend getting a tripod for any macro lens work. Most of the macro shots I take are between f/8 and f/16 which necessitates longer exposure times or higher ISO. A tripod will allow you to take long exposures and get really crisp shots.

There's some potentially confusing mis-info about regarding the EF-S 60 posted above...

The ef-s 60mm can zoom in 5 times more than the 100mm.
No.

It wouldn't be much help in a fish tank though because you would have to be millimeters away from what you are taking a picture of to achieve that.
No.

The 60mm is a dedicated macro lens
No.

Yes!

:)

But I would still get the 100 for longer working distance :D

Haha yeah the MP-E 65mm was the lens I was referring to but I mis-labeled it. Big mistake I got confused sorry! I knew something was weird because the MP-E 65mm is NOT an ef-s lens but I just coudln't put my finger on it. Doh.
