Canon Lens recomendation

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on a good all around lens for a Canon 70D. I want something that will be good for shooting some video and portraits but can also be used for landscape pictures as well.

I'm not necessarily looking for the most expensive lens on the market but do want something that is still very good that I can grow into.

Can anyone recommend something?

Have you considered getting a fixed prime lens instead? I am personally attracted to the 50mm. The 18-135 is a nice lens too. What are you using now? I still have the 18-55 kit lens for my 70D as well as the 100mm Macro.

Thinking of going with the 18-135mm STM. Might that be a good choice?

That is a nice all around lens that won't break the bank, would be a good fit on that body in my opinion.

I would pick up a 50 in addition to the zoom above... a used 50, or even new, is very inexpensive and would be nice to compliment a zoom. I had the sigma 30 mm for my 7D, it was a nice lens, same concept as the 50 basically.

what j said.
i find 18-135mm is a nice lens. and so is the 50mm. you can pick up the 50 for $100.

i like zooming though so the fixed lenses don't do me any favors.

On second thought, the EF 24-105 F/4L IS USM lens is a great bargain for an L lens. It will be perfect for all around shooting. They can be found for as low as $650 new. It is the kit lens that comes with the 1dx, 5d and 6D I believe.

The 24-105 is definitely a popular lens in the higher end category. I have a 24-70, which is a spectacular lens, but significantly more expensive, and I'll usually have my 70-200 with me to pick up the telephoto duties. Your budget and the quality you're looking for have a lot to do with what will work for you. I'm a big fan of The-Digital-Picture website for lens (and camera) reviews: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/reviews/canon-lens-reviews.aspx. They can get a bit overly technical, but they also do a good job wrapping up their review in a plain English summation of their findings.

I've got the 50mm f/1.2L USM lens and LOVE it! You can shoot anything with that lens, it's pretty much my "go-to" for daily snapping and for my tank. I've got the 100mm macro which is great too, and the 85mm F/1.8L USM which is an excellent portrait lens.

Wow that's a nice line up of lenses!

I recently picked up a used 18-135 and a new 1.8 50mm. For $300, I got one hell of a lens lineup for my T5i. The cheap 70-300 (or is it 75?) is also a good lens for outdoor, sunny pics. It's not a great lens, but it's good enough for my needs. I think they run $2-300'ish, new, IIRC.
