Can't believe this!!!!!

We had tried to pay her anything and she wouldn't have it. She wants nothing from the tank only to see it grow and become what her husband had invisioned it to be when he started. We told her of our 65 and that we would be taking our corals and fish from that and moving them to the 95 and she was happy about that. She had wanted corals in this tank but her husband was still at the fowlr stage. We just have to find homes for the tanks current residents. It will be a slow process. We were able to set up a sump and refuge over the last week. I'm not crazy about all the worms that live in the sand. They make tubes through the sand and over the rocks. I have never dealt with these before or at least on such a big scale. They are everywhere!!! The Aptaisa is going to be a process. First we need to find the hogfish a new home as he is a pill!!!! That was some expensive food for him. Our fault...should have researched hogfish more. My husband has named the pair of Maroons and decided he wants to keep them. He will be putting them into the 65 once everyone is moved. If we keep any of the rock is the aptaisa "seeded" into it and will always have problems with it???

Well if you want the rock and don't care about anything on it you can always let it soak in warm tap water for a few days. This will kill everything. I did this with some nasty cover rock from a friend. When I returned it to the tank it turned white for a bit then eventually cleared off and started growth again.

Nice find. I got a pretty stellar deal myself.

That's a sweet tank, nice find! I"m also glad to see that you won't forget her kindness either. 4 yrs ago I got into this hobby right here on this board from someones act of kindess. Gave me the skimmer I needed to get started for nothing and that really meant a lot to me esp at a time where I didn't have much money. A total stranger started me off. Thx Jim!!:) To nail the point home that IS apastia just bleached from not enough light and if you don't want a war on your hands you should really deal with it now. Trust me, 1 snuck into my tank on some mushrooms from the lfs, I saw it and thought I'll get it tomorrow. Oh how foolish I was! Not knowing at the time that they move, the next day went to kill it and of course it was gone. It was so tiny, didn't see it any where. About a week later I found it on the back glass during a water change and sucked it out. Gotcha!....not! 2 days later noticed 10 more killed them, week later about 30 tiny clones were waving at me. U see where this is going right? 2 months in my tanks was a species tank and not in a good way. Got so bad that my fish wouldn't even swim around anymore. Tried everything from injecting them with boiling fluids to peppermint shrimp just couldn't keep up them for every one I took out 2 replaced it. Finally got rid of them through a "happy" accident tank sprung a leak. Had to store my rock in unheated buckets of water in the garage in winter time till I resealed it. Took about a week. Scrubbed the rock and returned it. Ha! I won finally! Muuhaha...not! Somehow 2 still survived, how?? I freaked out, almost shot 'em. I regained my composure, and took them out. Even till this day I'll sit with my nose pressed against the glass watching, waiting, ready for war. Huh now that my rant is out of the way I'd shoot them now if I were you. :)

def bleached aptasia... If your plans are to tear this down and x-fer livestock, you can do a FW soak on the rocks for a few weeks and it should take care of the problem. Make sure you scrub scrub scrub though. Some people boil the rocks as well if there isnt anything worth saving on them anyway.

Well we just got some JOE'S JUICE. Will see if that does the trick. I would hate to kill the rocks and start over. But either way we have time to try a few things before we get drastic. For now it will stay a FOWLR. We have some work to do finishing our set up of the fuge and sump. Thanks for the help and horror story.

Just a small suggestion. I know she said she wanted it out of her house but she also wants to see it used to make a reef as her husband wanted to do. It might be a good idea to let her help you all pick and add some stuff to the tank. After all once a loved one has passed all we have are the memories of them. Might help her out a lil knowing its being put to good use.

Melev always nice of you to join!!!! Having some difficulty with the sump/refuge right now and trying to do some tweaking. We need to find new homes for our current inhabitants. Can't post on RC for a couple more weeks and our local LFS suck. In the mean time Just trying to combat the aptaisa. Really wanting to replace rock at this point. Anyone know more about these worms though? They are everywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am not liking them that much :( :( Blue and clearish-white. Making tubes all over the sand and rock.:mad2: Having problem with nitrates too. At first thought just because of disturbing the sandbed but even after water changes still keeps climbing? Any ideas?

Hi Ken and/or Wendy,

Usually the worms are nothing to worry about. Sometimes you add certain fish that reduce their population or keep them at bay.

Nitrates might be because the sand was reused or disturbed without rinsing. I have a page on my site about washing the sand thoroughly if the sandbed is over 6 months established.

We are learning to accept the worms. The Joe's Juice is awesome, and we have eliminated the aiptasia. Now we are patiently waiting to find new homes for the occupants. The yellow tang and sailfin tang are not the best of friends and will get way to big for this tank quickly.

Ken, my friends 210 was full of the tube worms your talking about... best way to rid your tank of them is purchase a Raccoon butterfly.

HOWEVER, make sure you get rid of the raccoon before you add any corals! These guys also have an appetite for Zoos and Clams and everything else you WANT to keep, but will decimate your tube worm problem in a few days flat.

Ken is learning to accept the worms I am not!!!! As said all inhabitants will need new homes except for the Maroon pair as Ken has decided to keep and put in our 65 after I move all of 65 inhabitants to the 95. It will be a process. I also like the Tomato Clown so we have decided to put in the fuge that Ken recently made. Need to find new homes and have decided to get rid of the 56. Three tanks is a bit much for us and our schedules. Can't wait to get done. Really going to make the 65 inhabitants happy with the new 95. Just trying to get the 95 ready for the big switch. A lot to do before get to that point. Biggest concern was the Aptaisa. Turf Algae battle is about won in the 65. Love emeralds!!!!!Man, that was a long and frustrating battle. The Tangs need to go first though. Sailfin is pretty big. He needs some more room. So far so good and thanks to all for your help. Keep you updated.

kenwendyb... The Raccoon will more than likely eat the aptasia too. Copper banded Butterflies work really well for natural aptasia removal as well, I used them in my reef the clear out the aptasia and they worked really well and fairly quick, however they can be somewhat difficult to keep.

Very nice ! I like the look of those tanks

send her a nice gift card from a local supermarket/foodstore in her area.. I`m sure she will appreciate that

i got aptesia from a rock i bought with zome zooathids on it. i got rid of them by making a paste from kalk and aplying it to the aptasia dirctly. the paste was about the consistancy of tooth paste. i removed the rock from the tank smeared on plenty of the paste then let it sit in a bucket for 20 min. gave it a good fresh water rince to remove all traes of the paste from the nooks and crannys in the rock then put it back in the tank. worked like a charm and was relly easy to do.

Kalk Paste works like a charm...though I have never bothered to freshwater rinse it. But I have only did it to a piece at a time so I did not pH shock the daylights out of the tank.

I have an artist brush that I use if I have to hit something that is really close to something I do not want to kill.
