cant trap Spock my Mantis nimasis

Diesel Man

In Memoriam
Hi folks, this is my first letter to here looking for help trying to trap a two inch long plan brown smasher about a half inch wide.
I call it Spock and he is watching me even now mocking my attempts to lure him into his trap, which by the way has purple coraline algie growing onit its been in there so long. I've tried shrimp, clams, and even sacrificed a turbo grazer to hammer into a tempting treat. I drilled a hole through the top of the trap and the trap trigger and then could stick the shrimp with a tooth pick so I wouldn't float out of the trap. I did catch a tiny lobster that day, I'm sure Spock has eating him since I let him go.
I'm running out of ideas. I have to much coral growing on the big rock in my 10gallon tank to dunk it in fresh water. The 14 dollar trap doesn't seem to work he just goes under it or knocks it so the door shuts.
Spock comes out without regard to time of day. He doesn't run if you tap the tank, in fact he stands his ground and waves smashers, which really freeks out the grilfriend, He will smash a turbo grazer while its on the glass. Its wild to watch and very noisy. He however hides the second you touch the top of the tank.
So here is what I would like. How do I catch this Mantis. Also this is the first Mantis I have ever seen. I am now really really looking to find a big mantis that has more color than Spock. Ive seen the pictures and read they are available around six inches. Holly S___t dont they crawel out of the tank? Will they chase my girlfriend around the house?(I'll take two then) What do you feed a six inch mantis. And since I live in a mobile home I have to watch the tank size or it will go through the floor. So how small of a tank can I get away with to hold a 6inch smasher. And where do I get one?????
My girlfriend allready wants to kill me for spending over $700 on a ten gallon tank, but my acrapora is growing out of control with all the light I have. Im wating to get Spock out before I ad the fish. I love my micro tank but Spock needs his own home( probably in my canal here in Key Largo). I need ideas folks... Help.... Greg....

You are lucky that your mantis is "social"... ours (we think) watched for us coming up the stairs and would then hide. Anyway IMO, if you already have a mantis that actually comes out of the rock to "flare" at you, you might do well to keep the status quo.

I'm not a mantis keeper, but I've heard that sometimes the only way to view the little murderers (sorry -- mine killed everyone in the tank) is to deprive him of a place to hide -- which no doubt is very stressful for them.

BTW, he WILL kill any fish you put in there... not necessarily immediately, but definitely eventually.

That said, there are some fish that are mantis resistant -- I bought a trigger to eradicate the little monster. Triggers apparently sleep very lightly and will even play dead in wait for some naive scavenger to come along.

Your tank is unfortunately too small for a trigger -- a very small trigger needs 55g+ or they go a little "nuts"... and if your mantis is 2" you need at least a 4" trigger.

Here's how we caught our mantis:

The trigger fish was keeping the mantis "bothered". The trigger was always digging around trying to get to him (and everything else) -- it sort of kept him unbalanced, I think, and he started doing things like coming out in the open in broad daylight.

We took advantage and saw him run into a small live rock -- one person picked up the rock while the other held a net under the rock(scooped up sand under rock) to catch him as he jumped off!!!

:D What a happy day! He's living in 10 gal. now w/another mantis; as they are both small, they have divided up the tank and coexist.

Sorry this post is so long -- I guess I'm still mad at that little lurker.

thanks

thanks

I wish I could take out the rock but its about the same size as the tank, the rock is huge. And of course the rock came with Spock in it. I have taken out the trap and will think up something new. From what I hear I really do have a social mantis so I think I wont chuck him in the canal when and if I do catch him.

Whoa!

Whoa!

Don't dump the little guy!

I'd be more than happy to take the mantis if you're successful in capturing it.
