Cantilever Tank stand

Anyone have any experience on a cantilever tank? I have a 180g (6x2x2) that will be in wall but I want some to stick out to get the long view. How do you know how far out you can go? Will 2x8 still be enough to support it?

how far out you can go and if a 2x8 will be enough depend completely on the design. keep in mind you can have the tank stick out to get the long view without a cantilever design.

Why not just build the stand into the wall so that the front of the stand forms the jog in the wall?

It can be done, but few of us have the technical expertise or materials to do it properly/safely. Realistically, the space under the cantilevered tank is useless anyway.

I feel from an aesthetic stand it would look nicer. The room that it will be going into will need a new hardwood floor at some point and I don't want to delay the tank build that much longer. If it is cantilevered I can change the floor whenever I want. Also for ease of converting it back when it comes time to sell?

Steel Stand designed by someone who understands the forces involved. It may need to be bolted to the floor.
