:bounce1: Looking good Capt. Snowflakes are beautiful creatures however make sure that you have a lid on your tank because I use to have one that would end up carpet surfing at night. I'd scoop him up & throw him back in there when I found him.
:D

I concur I had 2 of them in my 125 even went as far as too tape up the back of the aquarium leaving no holes at all.... one evening while watching TV I look on the floor and what do I see? Yep you guessed it the eel the only way it could have gotten out was the overflow:mad2: this has happen twice after that (well once I found him in the sump) so what did I do simple just put a piece of egg create with a plastic rain guard cover over it and wire tied it together. no more lose eels.;)

I am planning on fitting the top of the aquarium with some eggcrate. The trick is going to be finding a way to make it stay in place, but then still be easily removable for feeing, etc. Anyone have any suggestions there?

Also, thanks for the tip on covering the overflow...

I'm looking for suggestions as well....it's kind of a pain having to remove the eggcrate every time that I want to move some rock, grab some detritus off the bottom, or something like that. I guess it beats clown fish sticks though :)

I used the old fashion glass canopies that come with standard aquariums. trimmed out the back plastic as close as possible then taped up the rest.... presto sealed tank (or so I thought). Then again this was a FO system and light penetration was not of concern. this is just A thought why not cut out some eggcrate to size of aquarium opening leaving out a X size for access panel to aquarium then zip tie together to create a hinge you could even use another zip tie for a handle it would not be the prettiest thing I am sure however if you have A canopy know one would ever see it anyway.

Paul, i did something similar to this on a tank in the past. When i trimmed the eggcrate. I used a band saw and cut the eggcrate about 1/4 inch to small and them went and got some weather stripping from autozone or ace. And glued it to the sides of the eggcrate and it fit perfect, without any play.

Just a thought.

Mine took both hands to free from the hole. So i would be inclined to say yes.

But bear in mind I have never had an eel. I friend of mine in texas tought me this trick. And he uses it for octo tanks. but i dont know how much force an eel has.

I like the idea of a eggcrate panel that can be opened up. Cool
Like cdentii1, I used the old fashion glass canopies that come with standard aquariums.

To keep the eggcrate from being moved why not place some wood trim or something around the canopy bottom to sit on the eggcrate then cut some panels out & use a clamp to keep it shut tight until you need to get into it?

Just pondering :D

Nice tattoo Paul. How's it healing up?
It's healing up great - I think it has really just about finished peeling. And it has only been a week... :D

Thats the same approach used on the "removable" baffles for sumps. It works extremely well.
Yep, I was thinking about that. I think I am going to have to give this a try --- I really like the idea. I am also brainstorming a way to anchor this down with some sort of hook or something. Only challenge is, of course, that it has to look nice. I am all about aesthetics. Speaking of which, I need to come up with a faux canopy to block the stray light from the MH pendant from blinding my eyes. Better work on that at the same time.

I have some ideas..... :)

Btw, for those interested, I am attending my first official meeting of the DFWMAS today. Should be interesting to see how different or similar things are there.

But no worries - my first loyalties are still to COMAS.... :)

Paul, was it you who had the link to the bulb that Melev was using as a fuge bulb? Lights of america I thought.

Yes, I did.

However, I've decided it is crap. I used them for over a year with minuscule cheato growth. Recently I switched to a simple incandescant "daylight" colored spot bulb from Lowes (like you'd use in track lighting). Now I get AMAZING growth. Seriously, I have had 10x as much growth in the last month then I had in the last year.

If you like, I'll bring you all of the LOA bulbs that I have, including some that have only been used a couple months.

:)

Odd, I have been using a LOA bulb for only a few months now and tons of growth in the CHeato. In fact, I have Coraline growing in the sump allready. Hmm... Wonder what the difference is.
