Captive bred annularis angels - anyone purchased?

I remember seeing that Bali Aquarich began sending captive bred Annularis angels back in 2012. Now I see them listed on LA and wonder if anyone has purchased them. These are not in the DD section. Assuming these are from Bali Aquarich but it doesn't specify (just Indonesia). I have always received great stock from DD but it is hit or miss with LA regular fish. I am definitely in the market for a juvenile annularis (and blueface) so this seems like a great opportunity. But considering the weather is turning here in Michigan, shipping is also more risky for the next few months. Anyway, looking for any insight you may have regarding this particular species from this particular source.

Side question - anyone ever see a captive bred blueface angel for sale?? To my knowledge, these have not yet been propagated.

Wen is the angel master there at Bali and the ones that are on LA site are from Quality Marine as all other fish on the website are, beside DD. As far as I know blue face angels haven't been captive bred for mass production if you will. There is a whole lot of time and effort involved in breeding angels. I know that Karen could make it happen but I don't think she would due to the time/effort and lack of resale value in blue face angels. She focuses her time with the GP's and Bandits for obvious reasons. The Annularis angels are relatively cheap for being CB in my opinion. I have been looking at them lately myself. If you end up pulling the trigger let me know, would like to hear about your experience

Thanks for the info. Seems like it's pretty easy to find the standard blueface angel (juv) so I will just have to do that. For the annularis, I have not yet seen a CB at my LFS though I have asked them to look. May just have to place an order from DD or LA though I am a bit concerned about shipping in this weather. I've done it before with good success but it always gives me a bit of anxiety. I'll let you know how that goes for sure.

It was below 30 this am around here and I just got a shipment from LA and everything was fine. With LA having free shipping over $99, its hard to not buy from them. I would imagine your LFS would charge at least that for one and not offer a 2 week money back guarantee?

Great point! I forgot about the shipping charge over $99. Hopefully that will continue for a while. Better go check the availability today.

I got one of the CB Annularis from LA. Probably about an inch on arrival. Eats everything I throw at, although Cyclopeeze seems to be its preference. Fairly aggressive for is size. It’s now in a 300 and holds its own with a much larger juvenile Emperor and small adult Blueface. I’m not aware of CB Bluefaces.

Looks awesome! This is the standard LA fish, not the DD correct?

I do see that DD currently has 2 Bali Aquarich annularis angels. If they are still around after the weekend I may have to buy one.

DD is nice for finicky eaters but CB fish either eat prepared foods from the start or never make it to market, so they should be pretty bullet proof

Why do the pretty angels, or any other fish for that matter, always run North of 200 / 300 dollars :( BTW what is CB?

Edit: Ignore my CB comment. I thought it was a store and didn't connect 'captive bred' ...

Pretty fish are like pretty women, typically never cheap but usually worth the money, time and effort:thumbsup:

Probably right. Still, not sure I'd trust myself with that expensive of a fish just yet. Odd it may sound but I still don't have the greatest QT skills thus me adding fish at a very slow rate. Will be interesting to see what my 240 will look like stocked because I'm struggling to find a decent stocking list that is reasonably priced. I'm guessing the 6 fish I'm moving will think they won the lotto with all the new space (and they are all tiny fish - mated clowns, azure damsel, pj cardinals, and algae blenny - lol).

Then again, maybe I can ask my better half to forgo a nice bottle of wine or two and buy me a pretty fish instead :hmm2:

Good luck. Take your time, there is no need to rush anything. Angels are my soft spot, but most of them are pricy. I seem to like the really expensive one to make matters worse. QT should consist of observing for 6-8 weeks and treating with prazi. I wouldn't use copper or chloroquine phosphate unless you notice Ich. There is definitely a learning curve involved with QT and knowing what to look for behavior wise with fish is another learning curve. Sometimes you will never see actual physical signs of disease, just behavior cues

You mentioned Fritz Aquatics Mardel Clout before which I made a note to read up on. Does Prazi supersede or work in conjunction with Prazi? And I will be going slow. I'll move my existing fish and coral first of course while building a fish stocking list and introduction order if that makes sense. I also like angels but I'm ignorant of the larger ones. I have only owned pygmy in the past with that being limited to Flame and a Coral Beauty.

I'd like to have one or two larger angels this time around that are comfortable in a 54" wide tank that is 30" deep and tall. I do have a regal on my wish list, as well as a bluegill longfin, marine beta, and starcki damsels. My tank is mostly soft corals though(one reason why I stalk all you guys in the fish section or cool fish thread :) ). Anyway - I'm derailing the thread, sorry.

Thanks again! And I am in no rush - lots to learn on the QT process and how many can be done at a time that is safe for everyone.

For most of those pretty angels juveniles are 1/3 the price and are much better shippers. Even the CB Annularis are only $79 at LA. The regal and the Conspict. are among the few where Juvy's cost more

Good point Alton... this is what I've always done and to great effect. The juveniles have such a great color in my opinion and I really love to watch them transition into adult pattern. I haven't had a large angel for about 5-6 years now so I'm eager to get a couple more. This time I'm not only going with juveniles, but TINY juveniles. I plan to get a DD annularis as long as they're still around on Monday. The goal is to have it shipped to arrive on Wednesday as I'll be home all day. :0)

The blueface is an open question mark still. Trying to get one wholesale but if that doesn't work I'll see what the LFS can do. Goal will be to raise the annularis and blueface together for several months.

Saf, I use clout instead of praziquantel because I have encountered prazi resistant flukes and it caused mass losses. Never again

Thanks! Sorry to always ask you so many questions :) That answered my question. Have a good weekend.
