hello all!

i just picked up 3 carberryi anthias! i'm super excited, this is my first group of anthias and they are beautiful! i have them in QT --

my plan is to get them eating in QT first, then run a little copper, and maybe some prazipro? i have heard prazipro is recommended for fluke prevention / treatment in anthias especially, is that right?

1. anything else i should do in particular?
2. anyone know how to sex them? i hope i got lucky and got a male and 2 females, but i dont know. in carberryi's, is the distinguishing factor the color or fin shape?

thanks all.

EDIT: Good news -- i just fed them and they are eating!! they nibbled on small spectrum pellets. i put some cyclopeeze in their earlier, they may have munched a bit, but definitely they are eating now that i put in some fish eggs from Rod's food. yum yum!

great looking fish. i'm hoping to get 6-7 of them soon to start them in QT. cant help answer any questions as i dont have any personal experience with them. although that is what i've seen recommended to QT them, light copper and prazipro.

anxious to hear what others say...

what size QT tank do you have them? the only tank i have available to use right now is a 17g(24x12x14) and that wouldnt work for 6-7. or i could do 3 to start off...

I also have them. They love cyclopeeze, capelin fish roe, and various kinds of mysis. They eat well, are social, and cause no problems. My biggest concern is keeping up their coloration.

I've always had a hard time sexing them, especially since there are a couple color morphs (yours, then others that have bartlett/evansi coloration). Best I can tell, males definitely have the elongated lower caudal fin. Also, they have a bright orange spot on each side of their belly.

Good to know. If they did not move so fast, I might give sexing them a shot. :hmm4:

I just assumed buying young/little and let them figure out who will become male, but it seems my dispar has taken on that role w/ them and made them his harem.

looking good...

did you run copper on them?

i'm still up in the air about either going hypo or copper on the athias.

can you run copper and prazipro at the same time? not sure -- i'm not trying it. from what i've heard the concern on anthias is flukes or internal parasites so that's what i'm targeting in QT with prazipro. dont know if i will run copper after but probably not.

anthias are susectible to septicemia which is worsened by Hypo so i do not use hypo on anthias unless they are showing symptoms of ich.
nice anthias BTW they would look nice in with some tuka.

Here a shot of my male displaying...and you can see the belly spot I was mentioning. The colors are kind of messed up due to bad camera settings (oversaturated), but anyways, you get the idea.

crazy colors in that photo, but i see what you are pointing out. thanks. i havent seen that quite so prominently in any of them yet but i'll be on the lookout. there is one that is clearly the slightly larger of the 3 and it often 'displays' his spines. also has the longest trailing fin on his tailfins.

Can't wait to see some in tank shots. These anthias are gorgeous!!

thanks! can't wait to get them in the tank!

i've looked around and find pretty much the same word-for-word descriptions on the web -- can anyone help with the details of their feeding habits?

i'm trying to figure out if they will eat until they are full or eat as long as there is food, or are they the kind of fish that will only eat for a few seconds then stop, then need to eat again after a short time. i know they like to eat multiple times per day, but any further insight would be helpful with my portion sizing while they are in QT. thanks.

IME hardier anthias like these will start out eating only small amounts at a time, and spit food back out once full. Just keep a cup of thawed food by the tank, and drop a tiny bit in every 20-30 minutes.

But eventually they learn to gorge a bit more. Also, a trick I use, is feed least favorite foods first. Then by the time you get to their favorite foods, they are adding it to already full stomachs.

Great advice Peter!
