Carbon and GFO Dual Reactor

Thinking about picking a dual carbon and GFO reactor from BulkReefSupply. Any reason not to run GFO? A few people have said just run carbon only.

Running carbon 24/7 is not universally a good idea. With softie corals, yes. GFO is only if you have persistent algae or a phosphate problem.

I will have to warn against this without testing phosphate and nitrates. Especially if you have a mix reef tank like mine. I set one up and sps started to bleach. Test to see if you need it first. Thankfully I caught it and turned it off.

Why do you say that?

I agree that one shouldn't run GFO if they don't have a phosphate problem as excessive use of GFO can cause the phosphate levels to drop too low but running carbon 24/7 won't cause any harm..

I guess he means because of carbon stripping metals out of water. And ill effect on fishes.
I used to run it with no problem tho. And I have tangs.

Sk8r is a she....;)

Carbon wont have a detrimental effect on metals as it mostly absorbs dissolved organics..
