Carbon=clearer=more light?

Help me justify an expenditure here. If I run carbon and can make my water clearer.....wouldn't that allow more light to get to the bottom of my tank? I am trying to make myself feel better about buying a carbon reactor type of setup when in all actuality, my water looks pretty good as is. Any experience or expertise that you want to share?

Carbon does other things than just let the sun shine in.

I've always been advised to avoid running carbon in reef tanks on a regular basis.
